I am new here

hi everyone, i am a 25 yr old male, i have been drinking just about every day since i was 19. i am a musician and a graphic design major in college. i have a 3.9 gpa, and have a girlfriend of 4 yrs. but i know im treating my body bad, im growing **** and getting a gut, and get heart palpitations occasionally. i quit smoking cigarettes 2 years ago, and that really helped. but i have never really been in shape and it would be nice to drop this ********. also i dont eat all day, then i drink and eat before i go to sleep.

welcome jrock
Yeah - the lifestyle really did a number on me too.

Support was vital for me in changing my life - I know you'll find a lot of that here.

Agreed!

jrockpsycho, welcome to SR! You have found a great place for information and support! Keep coming back!

I am 28 and I've been drinking on a daily basis since I was around 20. I know it sucks to have this kind of problem in the 20s and thinking about spending the rest of the life sober seems so tough... well, at least to me. I do however know that it's my only option. I also did not have much of a life left besides drinking when I decided to quit (again) last year. Thinks have been better since then, but drinking managed to sneak back into my life. I had my first attempt of quitting when I was about your age. I did detox in a hospital twice, you might want to consider that if that's possible for you. It definitely helps to be in a different place for a week or two!

Anyway, hope you'll be back on here and let us know how you do with your adventure!

I'm with Tin Man - I had a problem when I was in college. 40 now and I wish I would have been smart enough to see it years ago.

Seems like the 40s are the time to figure it out! I'm 43, my health was really bad! 44 days sober now and I won't say it's easy but I will say I'm already doing better health-wise! . Welcome and even if you haven't figured out what you are going to do keep coming back!

i really messed up, i drank again, and after 2 years of not smoking tobacco i smoked again tonight. i just feel trapped. i don't have the money to move out of my father's house, and he wont send me to rehab, i have been to detox twice before, and nothing seems to work, i think i may just be feel depressed and condemned by the human condition.

How about trying an AA meeting? I live in a college town and I know a lot of young guys in AA (and one of them is not even of legal age to drink yet). There are many meetings for the 25 and under crowd.

I too, drank heavily in college (it seemed like everybody did) and kept it up until my mid 40's.

There are many atheists here who work an AA programme - I'm sure you'll hear from a couple.

If you've explored it, and you're set on AA not being for you though, don't let that be the end of your search - there are other programmes, and there's counselling...there's all manner of free and low cost inpatient rehab (the Salvation Army for example) and there's outpatient rehab as well.

If you feel stuck, there are options to help you find support

Some of the main players are here:

Welcome jrock. After 30 years of drinking and many attempts I finally quit. It can be done...try again.
