Day 3 - Confused a Bit
So I went to my first meeting a couple days ago, and then another yesterday. So far so good, but I'm a little confused on a few things.
First off, people are constantly saying that they're "working on step...fill in the blank". I'd like to start doing the same, but I haven't the faintest idea of how to go about it.
I'm guessing that I need a sponsor to help me, but I haven't found one yet. How does one go about finding a sponsor?
Another thing I've noticed when looking online for a meeting is that there are a number of types of meetings, and I'm not sure which one's are the right one to go to. There's step study, Big Book study, group discussions, speakers, and on and on. What meetings should newcomers without a sponsor go to?
Please help, and thank you.

Glad to know you are planning for a future without alcohol..Welcome..
As you mentioned....Yes Sponsors are mentors for working the Steps...
so I suggest you attend a Step Study meeting...and say you are looking for assistance.
Newcomer/Beginners meetings are also a good place to ask for sponsorship.
Please keep posting.....many of us are winning over alcohol...Yes that can be true for you too...

Welcome HS - congratulations on your 3 days sober!
Like Derrick said, you can ask anyone at a meeting. You can also go online to the AA website or look in the yellow pages in your area and get the local number.
All the best and remember to take it one day at a time!!

Anna's link is excellent. Newcomers meetings are especially for newcomers, although if you live in a smaller place they may not have specialized meetngs.
Working the steps is covered in the AA big book. You need to get one and read it. At the next meeting either announce to the group that you are looking for a sponsor, or if you see someone at the meeting that has what you want, just ask that person to sponsor you. Ask someone of the same gender as mixed gender sponsorship if not encouraged.

Good for you, Hopefully, and welcome to the start of a new life.
The Big Book of Alcoholics Anonymous is the textbook, or manual, for taking the 12 Steps and having a spiritual awakening. It contains specific and precise directions for how those first alcoholics recovered, and how a couple million alcoholics followed those same directions to achieve lasting, contented sobriety.
Though not always the case, the odds are better of finding someone who can walk you through that book and those Steps at a meeting where the book is the focus. That would be a BB meeting or a Step Study meeting. You could also check out the 12 Step forum on this site for interaction with many who are familiar with the process.
