These aching joints

Day 16. I still get a bit shakey and my dreams are strange but for the most part, my withdraws are gone. I have been waking up every morning with very achy joints and tendons. This morning is particularly bad. I take motrin on occasion but it doesn't help. I am 44 and have normal aches and pains but it has only gotten worse and daily since I stopped drinking. Any one else with this problem? Will it go away soon? I take vitamins and drink plenty of fluids. I do not exercise but with my job, I am walking and moving all day long.

It's best to talk to your dr about the joint problems.

I will add that, when I stopped drinking, I noticed health issues that I had been ignoring for awhile.

I learned about quite a few issues I didn't know existed when I stopped my second time. Definitely see your DR. like Anna said.

I'll never forget the conversation I had with my nurse the while was she taking my blood for blood work. Turned out she was a recovering alcohol and had kicked it years ago, and said once she did, the old "when it rains it pours" happened, because she was drunk for so long, it masked and numbed all the things that were going on inside of her, and when she got clean so much was wrong she just wanted to turn back to the booze, but didn't, fought it and has a clean bill of health now.

Stay strong and see what DR has to say, hang in there!

I found that a lot of my acheyness went away after stopping drinking...i could only think that booze exacerbated some inflammation i had....a lot of my problems come from carrying around the extra 25-30 lbs. i hope to lose. ugh! easier said than done.

Hi Ipnangel...I think I'll follow this thread for the same answers. My drinking, and the problems I have quitting, are closely related to joint and leg pain. Part of it is that I need a knee replaced due to bone on bone arthritis from a skiing injury 25 yrs ago. The other part I can't explain. I take a lot of pain killers, and have a physical scheduled, but someone here suggested a pain specialist, which I am also planning on pursuing. It may be tough finding someone highly versed in chronic pain and addiction, but I'm sure they are out there. I agree with Anna, the doctor route is best, but if you are like me in the past, and have hidden certain things from your doctor, I think its time to be straight about them. At least it is for me. I almost feel like I need a daily babysitter/coach to nurse me back to minimal pain and health. Good luck.

Lofty....you might be surprised at how knowledgeable a pain specialist is about addiction. My sister used to go out with a navy doctor who was De eloping a program for servicemembers to deal with pain and addiction...I've got to hope there are civilian doctors as good as he is

Thanks, LF. I have an appt this week with a client of mine who happens to be a nurse anesthetist (retired) and has mentioned a good pain mgmt. program at a local hospital he was affiliated with. It seems pain and addiction go hand in hand for many, so I'm hopeful. Of course, I'm fearful of giving up the narcotic pain killers. If I were a rich man, I'd just get the new knee now!

This is not medical advice, but from my own experience I was able to get rid of many of my aches and pains in my joints by cleaning up my diet.

I am 43, I played over 14 years of organized football all the way up to the collegiate level, I was a catcher in baseball and fastpitch softball for close to 30 years, I have some arthritus in my shoulders wrists ankles and knees, and I have been in 3 major car accidents.

Once I got rid of all the "white stuff" in my diet, (white flour, sugar, salt and milk), I saw a noticable difference in my aches and pains. I basically eat a low carb diet. I am pain free for the most part, and the only time these aches and pains reappear is when I cheat on my diet and eat icecream, candy, bread, etc, (large servings)

Again this is my own experience, but it has truly helped me live basically pain free.

This has helped me tremendously in the past also. The joints were always aggravated when I put the alcohol (wine full of sugar and other toxins) back in my body. I have been running for years and hope to do so for many more!

I try to eat low carb as well. I don't eat crazy low carb but I have cut out a lot of sugar and starchy foods. They cause inflamation in me big time.

Of course I'd go and have all the tests in the world done if I were you just to rule anything out but diet does deserve a go to.

South Beach for me tomorrow. I just got off the scale, and I'm up 25 lbs since I did it 6 yrs ago and lost 30. No more white stuff, legal or illegal.

I remember when i had newly quit my joints and back hurt all the time! I'm not sure why, but I do know I don't wake up feeling that way now.

Like others have said, probably not a bad idea to talk to your DR. It does get better. Keep up the good work!

I have never woken up with pain in every joint when I was drinking. Not to this extent. This only started a week after I quit drinking. The ache gets better throughout the morning. Someone mentioned cutting out white flour and sugar. In the last 5 years I may have one bagel a week. That was the extent of my bread. Since I quit drinking, I have been eating a lot of bread, starches and sugar. That could be why. I will cut the bread and sugar out for a while to see if that helps. Maybe I can lose this 9 pounds I have gained too. I don't think I need to see a doctor unless it gets much worse.

I figured out what is causing these aching joints. I looked up the side effects on these antidepressants my doctor prescribed and low and behold, a not so common side effect is stiff, achy joints. I have always been one to get the not so common side effects from medications. I even get sleepy when I take tylenol. My system is very sensitive. I am only on 1/2 the normal dosage so I cannot decrease it. I will continue to take them as the benefits out weigh the side effects. They level out my emotions. I am not taking any chances with my recovery. Thanks for all the input. I love this site.

I had chronic gout-like symptoms for years ( treated temp. with daily boozing)

Cut the alcohol out and diligent about cutting all processed sugar.amazingly ; the extreme bouts of joint pain cleared up. At 54, ....do have some ( what I believe are not uncommon ) aches, but find that a fitness program helps with that situation.

Reading Sugar Blues opened my eyes to the major difference between natural sugar (from fruits and veggies) and the rest of that processed crap. I was really shocked how that "stuff" is in practically every prepackaged grocery store product that's so-called "food".

Side effect of the anti's or not, ....you may, at least , consider carefully what we all so gallantly toss down.

......hope you can find some relief; ...chronic joint pain can get to be a real bummer.

Tylenol makes me very sleepy too.

you might want to check you this book YOU, the Owners Manual or YOU, On a Diet...both are written by Drs. Oz and Roizen....in the diet version it explains very simply the effects of white food/sugar on your body.

you should tell your doctor about your side effects as there may be an alternative for the certain anti-depressant or something to help the side effects (possibly Cymbalta)?
