Day One: Evening
Day One: Evening
I flirted briefly with going out -- I would plan not to drink. But somehow, probably because I'm cripplingly tired from the last stunt, managed to decide not to.
So. We're watching a movie and excavating a half gallon of ice cream. An honorable goal for an alkie girl and her codie boy.
Canned soup is on the hob and I am very proud that I said "no," out loud and more importantly, in my heart.
I will wake up tomorrow ready to take the world on instead of crouching against a center that "cannot hold."
Goodnight loves. I'll check in, but thank you for helping me get through this day. I'm good for another 24 hours!

Good for you! Isn't it great getting through a day without having to start over the next? I had a dilly bar (cherry, of course) last night with my wife, looked her straight in the eyes and said, "I'll take this over beers any night of the week!" It was quite freeing. Enjoy the excavation and V.W. as well, To the Lighthouse is one of the most profound and greatest books I've ever read... I took a women's lit class when I found out my wife and I were having a daughter and it was one of the best I took while studying English lit. Anyway, Bon Apetit!
p.s. Why do all (the ones I've encountered anyway) of the feminist novels have some sort of connection to water? Have you ever noticed that? One of those questions that I always wanted to ask, but never had the time to do in class...

Wow! A VW reader. I'm actually working on a serious project about her--when I'm focused. Water and women...flow...tides...impermanence...cycles...the moon. I currently have a student writing a paper on waves in women's writing (I teach women writers!).
Good for you and your wife. I know the purity of non-alcoholic decadence. I don't know why I have let it get away from me.

Hey Missy,
Thanks for the post, and same to you! Sounds like we both did ok getting through "Day One". Seeing as we are at the same place in a manner of speaking, we should keep up with each other.
Thanks again, and have a good fresh eyed morning!
Jay

yay! proud of you!
Water + Women = floating
I think women have been so historically repressed that we often feel like floating is the equivalent to swimming, or moving about in our lives with direction.
At least that's what I got from Kate Chopin's The Awakening, until the heroine sank ; )
I need to read some Virginia Wolf. Everyone says she is great.
Toodles.

Ooh, literary alkie friends. Gosh, if I had known I would have been here long ago. You know, it's interesting. Many, many male writers are known alcoholics--not so many women. Women just commit suicide. Maybe they also have problems but the cred is different.
And Frances--I'm so glad you saw it. I love that poem.

Oh joy, I get to pass along the wonderful thing called the Dilly Bar. Have you ever had a dipped ice cream cone from Dairy Queen? A dilly bar is the portable version. You can go to a DQ store and buy them in boxes of 6 for around 8 bucks-- take them home and stick them in the freezer for a rainy day. They are good for sunny days too! I prefer the cherry coating with vanilla soft serve ice cream, but there is also mint chocolate chip in chocolate coating or the classic vanilla soft serve with chocolate coating... Heavenly!
On the other side of this thread, couldn't you say that laudanum usage borders on a form of alcoholism? I know the active ingredient was an opiate, but wasn't it often mixed with booze to cover what was really going on and accelerate the effects? I know that more than a few writers during Woolf's period used the potion in an effort to intensify the emotions and sensory perceptions of not only themselves, but the readers as well.
Anyway, the next time you get the opportunity, grab yourself another movie and a pack of dilly bars! one bar is roughly the same amount of calories as one beer, but you will remember the bar much more fondly than the beer... hmm, I think I've got something to add to my signature line! Happy weekend folks, I am glad we've found this thread!
Thanks for eating ice cream Missy!

I couldn't stop my inner geek. Has anybody visited the book club thread? I just found it and I think it may be a spot all of us will enjoy in days to come. I initially slapped this post here to try out my new-found signature, but alas, it was not to be tonight. Thanks again everybody and have a happy weekend!
