Unhappy Sleeplessness

This is what trips me up. Already not looking forward to an evening of tossing and turning. Tylenol PM and others like it just seem to increase anxiety. Any suggestions or do I just need to wait this out?

Unfortunately, you'll probably need to wait it out. I had the same issues when I first quit drinking. Tossing and turning, cold sweats, strange dreams... it really sucked. But it didn't last more than a week or two and then it got noticeably better. I didn't try to take any sleep drugs though. But I was in outpatient rehab and we really were discouraged from taking anything other than ibuprofen, vitamins and non-addictive prescriptions

Your sleep will start to regulate itself pretty soon. You just have to be willing to put in the 6-7 days to get to that point. Hang in there, it gets better.

Agreed. Took me about 6 or 7 days but it does get better.

Stay strong and hang in there. You can do it!

When your mind is used to functioning one way then all of a sudden it ceases and is forced to operate another way...lots can happen. It'll take a few days of being tough but sleep when you can -take a nap. Even just relaxing doing nothing is a good way to chill.
I love going to bed to sleep now...I know I'll be rested and refreshed in the morning. No more tossing and turning and waking up all different hours of the night. You'll get there.

This is very normal Cork... and like other stated, you do need to wait it out. I have heard that Tylenol can keep you awake, there may be caffeine in it???

I would try hot bath and chamomile tea and reduce as much noise as possible. If you are concern give your doctor a call.

Take good care of yourself -- lots of water, healthy food, some exercise, etc.

Glad you found SR, it is a wonderful, sharing community.

try a small dish of vanilla ice cream about 30 mins. before bedtime...and take your calcium supplement at night..for some reason this always helps me sleep.

Hi corkthewine

Welcome to SR

I agree with everyone - it's very common and unless it's really causing problems for you, I think it's best to simply wait it out

Here's a few tips though

Hi cork!

The sleeplessness was one of the things that really tripped me up. Know that it will get better. In fact I am about to crash in a few minutes and I know from experience I will sleep for at least 8 healthy hours tonight.

Some people found Melatonin to be helpful...I used it and think it helpless me fall asleep but staying asleep that first week was a b*itch.

I figure

If I could stay up all night drinking and not only wake up worn out, but with a hangover from hell to boot, then repeat daily, I could handle the few weeks it took me to get back to a good night's sleep with no hangovers or sudden waking up to think OMG! I didn't . . .OH no I did do or say that!

It surprised me when someone would say hey you look great in the first few weeks when I felt worn out and had my days and nights mixed up. Then I realized how much better I looked without the puffy face and bags under my eyes from drinking daily AND a hangover.

Hang in there or hangover!
