Song 'Tainted Love' and Alcoholism/Drug Use

Hi guys/gals! I heard this song today while I was on hold with my dentist and it made me think of my addiction with alcohol. Does this song, or any others remind you of your alcohol addiction or battle with drugs?

Sometimes I feel I've got to
Run away I've got to
Get away
From the pain that you drive into the heart of me
The love we share
Seems to go nowhere
And I've lost my light
For I toss and turn I can't sleep at night

(chorus)
Once I ran to you (I ran)
Now I'll run from you
This tainted love you've given
I give you all a boy could give you
Take my tears and that's not nearly all
Oh...tainted love
Tainted love

Now I know I've got to
Run away I've got to
Get away
You don't really want IT any more from me
To make things right
You need someone to hold you tight
And you'll think love is to pray
But I'm sorry I don't pray that way

(chorus...)

Don't touch me please
I cannot stand the way you tease
I love you though you hurt me so
Now I'm going to pack my things and go
Tainted love, tainted love (x2)
Touch me baby, tainted love (x2)
Tainted love (x3)

This one seems to sing to me:

George Jones

A Drunk Can't Be a Man

He embarrasses his child and wife
Lord, he leads a miserable life
But still he thinks the bottle in his right hand
And he can tear down more than he's ever built before
A man can be a drunk sometimes
But a drunk can't be a man.

He lets his business lag behind
For the nightlife he can find
Why he does all this he'll never understand
And in the morning when he wakes up
Lord, he can't wait to fill his cup
A man can be a drunk sometimes
But a drunk can't be a man.

For he goes from Dr. Jekyle to Mr. Hyde
He seems bound to have the devil for his guide
If he keeps on reachin' out
Lord, he needs a helping hand
But a man can be a drunk sometimes
But a drunk can't be a man.

Yes, a man can be a drunk sometimes
But a drunk can't be a man...

Between the Bars ---- Elliott Smith

Drink up, baby, stay up all night
The things you could do, you won't but you might
The potential you'll be that you'll never see
The promises you'll only make
Drink up with me now and forget all about
The pressure of days, do what I say
And I'll make you okay and drive them away
The images stuck in your head
People you've been before that you don't want around anymore
That push and shove and won't bend to your will
I'll keep them still
Drink up, baby, look at the stars
I'll kiss you again between the bars
Where I'm seeing you there with your hands in the air
Waiting to finally be caught
Drink up one more time and I'll make you mine
Keep you apart, deep in my heart
Separate from the rest, where I like you the best
And keep the things you forgot
The people you've been before that you don't want around anymore
That push and shove and won't bend to your will
I'll keep them still

Also, from Smith's True Love, where my username comes from:

True love is a rose
behind glass that's locked and kept closed
maybe just to me 'cause my heart's been attacked
shattered by tough love, bad love

I was singing along with Tainted Love just this morning on the way to work....i'm sure anyone that saw me bopping along in my car, beating on the steering wheel, had a good chuckle....good thing the windows were up.

GHW - I absolutely love the song Tainted Love! One of the best dance songs of the 80's IMO. I never thought of its meaning in terms of addiction but I think you may be on to something! = )

YouTube - Tom Petty - Runnin' Down a Dream LIVE - 2008.07.08

Tom Petty - Running Down A Dream

It was a beautiful day, the sun beat down
I had the radio on, I was driving
Trees flew by, me and Del were singing
Little Runaway I was flying

CHORUS
Yeah running down a dream
That never would come to me
Working on a mystery
Going wherever it leads
Running down a dream

I felt so good like anything was possible
I hit cruise control and rubbed my eyes
The last three days the rain was unstoppable
It was always cold, no sunshine

CHORUS
Yeah running down a dream
That never would come to me
Working on a mystery
Going wherever it leads
Running down a dream

I rolled on as the sky grew dark
I put the pedal down to make some time
There's something good waiting down this road
I'm picking up whatever is mine

CHORUS
Yeah running down a dream
That never would come to me
Working on a mystery
Going wherever it leads
Running down a dream

"Waiting Around to Die" by Townes Van Zandt

Sometimes I don't know where this dirty road is taking me
Sometimes I can't even see the reason why
I guess I keep on gamblin', lots of booze and lots of ramblin'
It's easier than just a-waitin' 'round to die

One-time friends I had a ma, I even had a pa
He beat her with a belt once cause she cried
She told him to take care of me, she headed down to Tennessee
It's easier than just a-waitin' 'round to die

I came of age and found a girl in a Tuscaloosa bar
She cleaned me out and hit it on the sly
I tried to kill the pain, I bought some wine and hopped a train
Seemed easier than just a-waitin' 'round to die

A friend said he knew where some easy money was
We robbed a man and brother did we fly
The posse caught up with me, drug me back to Muskogee
It's two long years, just a-waitin' 'round to die

Now I'm out of prison, I got me a friend at last
He don't steal or cheat or drink or lie
His name's codeine, he's the nicest thing I've seen
Together we're gonna wait around and die
