So here is another Newbie needing help

Hi folks...gosh, I feel like so many stories here are my own. I have lots of reading to do tonight. That being said, I have a problem drinking socially. I have, like many here, tried saying two drinks only, water in between....you know the mantra. Well, bottom line I just have to give it up. I have no desire to drink at home alone, but if I go to dinner with friends or go to a holiday function, I get snockered almost every time. Sick of it. So I wake up today and it just feels different this time. I am now over 50 years old and this has to stop. I am not giving myself an option...going to join a 24 hour fitness center within walking distance from home, start eating right, lose weight, and stop the insanity with my binge drinking. I just words of wisdom for down the road....I really want to be that person that drinks Perrier at functions...in fact I look forward to it. I will not waste one more day because of a hangover. I want to really hang with you guys for advice and guidance. Thanks to all. I don't mind getting fussed either...tough love works.

Welcome Chris! You've definitely come to the right place, the support here is amazing

I'm the opposite of you, as I do the majority of my drinking at home, in secret. Although not really the opposite actually as I drink a lot when I'm out socialising too! So I'm like you in that respect!!

I wish you well in your journey, you seem determined and have the right attitude. Stick with it and I've no doubt you can be that 'Perrier gal' in the future!! Good luck!

Great idea...no one ever said you HAVE to drink just because others are. Drinking Perrier will give others the impression you are in control of yourself. They should be too! =)
Good luck and stick around...always good info here.

I was in your shoes just 33 or 34 days ago while feeling desperate and wanting to quit forever. So far so good! Like yourself, I woke up one morning and just had enough. I had no plan to quit, but I just knew it was time. Getting some exercise is a great start! A well-balanced diet is a good thing, too! Constantly reminding myself of where I've been and how I got here has helped tremendously as well, for I never want to go back. If the temptation to drink begins to haunt you, just say "NO." Best of all, there are a lot of folks here that are just like you, and they're all here to help.

Thanks everyone. Just joined anytime fitness...walked there and back! I actually look forward to making plans for sober living. I can't waste anther day wondering "why"....and tonight will be early to bed so I can do lots of reading here. I identify with so many people here. You know, I am thankful that at least we all recognize our faults and are willing to stop the madness. So many people don't....I have several friends that binge and never consider stopping. I am getting off that train and hopping on a new one!!!

Thanks, Chris.....and good for you! I have several friends that binge or drink regularly as well, and I'm in a situation where I can't really avoid them. Amazingly, though, I've received a huge amount of support from all of them. I just decided that I'd face the situation "head-on" whether my friends liked it or not, and if any of them didn't like the idea of me not drinking, well, they probably weren't really my friends in the first place. Fortunately, I haven't had to encounter any friendship issues.

But hey.....just go for it! All you need to know is that you CAN do it if you really want to, and there are many resources out there to help if needed.

Hi, Chris, welcome! I think it's smart to include exercise as part of your plan—really helped me get through the tough times. Plus, since I drank every night, it was good to start new things to help fill the void. In some ways it felt easier to make lots of changes rather than just one.

Anyway, glad you've joined us!
