New guy intro and a little background

Well after reading through some post on here, I felt compelled to join and begin my recovery. I'm an alcoholic. I've known this for about 4 years now. I'm in my mid thirties and have been drinking since I was 18. I don't drink everyday, but I binge heavily when I do drink. As many of you have posted my hangovers are severe to extremely severe. Sometimes it will take up to 2 days for me to feel normal again. After a day or two of that I will find a reason to go out and wreck myself again.

I was arrested for DUI about 3 years ago. That was my lowest point. I've done so many shameful things I can't even list them all. The worst is missing out on things in life because I was hung over so bad I couldn't function. I've missed friends weddings, birthdays, etc..

The longest I've been sober since I was arrested was about 30 days. I was scared clean for a month but it wore off. I know I can't beat alcohol alone. I'm very happy to be a member of this forum and plan to contribute as much as possible. I'm on day 2 hence the username newclean1. I would love for that name to change to beenclean or stillclean. Thanks in advance - Heres to staying clean.

Hi Newclean1

Welcome to the SR community and congratulations on taking this important step!

I was also a binge drinker, drinking heavily since the age of 18 but just had my 1 year of sobriety in February

I wouldn't have gotten this far without the love, friendship, support and advice of the good people here on SR so please keep posting and reading and take this new path one step at a time.

Big hugs,

Almath

Alcohol robbes us of many things...for me ..it turned me
into a woman I detested. I lost my self respect.
So I drank again to feel better about myself..

Welcome to our recovery community....

Welcome to the family. It is possible to stay sober and live a better life - I've been sober for the last 15 months and loving it.

Hi Newclean-

I can certainly relate to your story and much of it could have been written by me. We are also about the same age.

I'm an AA'er and the steps are designed to not only remove the obession of drinking, but also to relieve the negative feelings you have b/c of your past.

It worked for me, but I'm not special. It can work for you too.

We can and do recover and you can be living proof.

Congratulations of your choice of sobriety.
I didn't drink everyday either. I think I've gone up to a year without booze. But since I've drank since I was about 15 (32 years ago) and have been binging, hiding, lost my job, lost alot of life in general...no DUI's but I just assume had maybe that would have lit the fire under muh butt to really quit...so, yeah, I'm an alcoholic but that all can change with one choice...don't drink! Good Luck.
