Pills for pain

Hi all, new here. Hope you are all doing fine.

I am not an addict per say. I have been on oxycodone for many years as I have diabetic neuropathies and I take them for pain. Yearly, they have of course increased. I have neuropathy of the bowel/urinary tract and can't go to the bathroom as it stands but w/ the addition of pain meds, I can't go at all. I keep winding up in the ER and they are not able to help me.

The only way to have a normal life is to get off of pain pills but then I do not know how to treat the nerve damage. I do not respond to the other meds. I am willing to get off, (nerve damage is one of the worst pains ever) and try maybe Cymbalta but I am also afarid of withdrawal. I think I can get my Dr. to put me in the hospital.

I am very scared. Please, any suggestions if allowable. My Dr. is a neurologist and not a drug specialist but he may be willing. I just want to go to the bathroom. I am in serious trouble now. I take 180 Oxcodones a month.

Thanks. I am not needing recovery work as I do not crave or am not a mental addict but a pain pt. It is only my choice to get off of them. Oh, every medical professional says it will not work due to the pain.
Thank you for letting me speak.
I feel lost and am hurting.

Always

Have you stopped taking them long enough to know that your mind doesn't need them? I don't know anything about drug addiction besides what I learned in my rehab class when we touched on it...Sounds like you better talk to your doctor! =)

Hi Cat22

Welcome

The only suggestion I can give you is talk to your Dr - maybe even get some other medical opinions through referrals - it's simply not true that your only two choices are oxys or pain.

There's a whole range of treatments out there - but only a qualified physician can recommend which would be right for your specific needs

we also have a pain management forum here you may be interested in

I guess you can't understand, or you need to look up neuropathies....
School books should be able to explain that to you. What a great answer. Thanks.

Pain is the result of the above dx. Quite obviously, you need to study a tad bit of medicine before advising anyone. Neuropathies may be the result from one who is a child diabetic for many years/chemo if one has cancer.

Maybe you should ask your teacher the difference between a medical disorder/dx and the mind and get educated. That may help you in your future care of any pts. The mind does not make neuropathies as the nerves are damaged.---Yet, I was not here to give a medical lecture to a student. Sure hope your care for future clients involves reading.

Thank you so much for your suggestions. I was offered other narcotic type meds but did not want them as the same result would happen, (constant, hardcore constipation and bowel problems). You are correct. I need to consult with another Dr. and a pain specialist. Thanks for the direction to the Pain Management Forum too.

I also will have to find out after consulting, how to withdraw and not be stuck with severe neuropathies all over. I have had neuropathy for 25 years and I'm young.
As stated, I am afarid of w/d as I have never been through anything like this. I was happy to read some of the posts in other threads that comforted me a bit.

Good day and good health to you.

Cat

We're a peer support group here - we're just ordinary folk.
None of us here should have any pretensions to being experts, and there's no requirement to be.

I always try and remember everyone here has taken time out of their day to try and help me.
It simply does you, or any one else here, any good when we forget we're all on the same side
