Introduction - New To Forum

I have finally decided to join this forum. I have been reading it on and off for a long time now and it has motivated me greatly.

I have used and abused alcohol for various time my entire life. Drinking has caused me to lose decades of my life...the quality of those times was simply not there. So here I am at 50...I am in a relationship of 13 years...I am living my dream of living as an expat in South America (currently in Argentina for 4 years now but planning a move to Colombia within the next 2 months).

I am self-employed for the past 15 years...what more could a man want? I can tell you as we all know is more...more from life than I get from drinking every night to the point of passing out. More then going out at night and not remembering what happened during a blackout period (several times a week).

My partner is also a drinker and we have a very codependent relationship. The past couple of years we started to have frequent fights while drunk...some of which were very physical. Still I drank...well, I have come to the point that things must change or someone is going to get killed.

I have not had a drink since Feb 7th.

Thanks for reading this and I hope to be a frequent active contributor to this forum for my own benefit and hopefully the benefit of others!

Way to go on your step into sobriety land. Don't trip!

I'm an expat in the Philippines. Hang out here and learn with me!

Great folks here, caring, smart...like I say, drunks and addicts are the best lot I know...now that there committed to sobriety.

And we're everywhere, man, all over the world. Got any to hang with down there?

Is your partner considering quitting also? It'll be hard just you alone with the partner carrying on as before.

Yes, we expats are everywhere indeed! Unfortunately I don't know any expats (sober ones anyway) down here...I doubt it will be any better in Colombia but who knows?

He talks about it but does NOTHING to change at all...yes, it is very difficult with him continuing to drink the same amount and getting drunk like clockwork each night...every time we go out to eat...etc.

I am hoping that to lead by example...hopefully once he understands that this change is real that he will be motivated as well...but I understand that we each must make the decision and commitment for ourselves so he's not gonna side track me.

Thanks...well I already have noticed one change from people...I live in a building here in Argentina with 24 hour security and they have NEVER seen me walk the dog at night sober...I have noticed the sort of look of shock in their eyes the past few weeks when I go out and instead of stumbling along actually walk in a straight line! Feels nice...

LOL I've done that...and sometimes took a teeny bottle just in case I got thirsty along the way!

Welcome to SR. Nothing changes if nothing changes. It will never get better unless you stick on the path of sobriety. Congrats on the days you have and keep it going one day at a time!
