Lightbulb I never used to open the curtains...

My daughter noticed the last time she was home from school that I open the curtains nowadays to let in the sunlight. My home used to be dark, literally and figuratively, but now I've let in the light and what a difference it makes. I can 'see' with the light streaming in. I can see the corners of my room and my soul and can keep them clean and bright.

Coming up on 15 months sober next month and I feel like a whole 'nother person, not the lonely angry self destructive person I used to be. The change is pronounced and very noticeable. Many people, both family and others, have commented on my positive attitude and happy disposition. And living 'in the light' is a self fulfilling prophecy. The more I walk in the light, the more light comes in to my soul and my life. It goes beyond just me, it affects those around me in a good way.

I used to be a victim of my own misery, trapped in a cycle of despair and self loathing, but no more. Now I'm happy because I choose to be, despite circumstances. I'm happy cause there's a wellspring of happiness deep within me.

If you're still suffering in the cycle of despair and misery, let in the light! I am grateful that I now 'walk in the sunlight of the spirit' (as GypsyFeet says). Even on 'cloudy' days there is light within me. I am happy and free. Try it yourself. Let in the light.

I spent so much time thinking in terms of giving up alcohol. Now I see that it's more about getting back so many things that I gave up for alcohol. Awesome reminder of that, least. Thank you!

Beautiful.

I remember the thread about this being a terrible snow filled year. Seasonal Affective Disorder, and the like. Not to diminish anyones feelings....

I thought it inappropriate at the time, but will now relate, from a town with little sunlight and much snow.

"Everybody complains about the weather, but nobody does anything about it."

We make our own weather. Anybody up for "Dancing in the Rain"?

I also need more gratitude. Thank you Least!

Sunlight symbolists the hope, they 'ray of hope'

Great!

Sunshine changes anyone's attitude. I know it does mine...cloudy today, expecting 6-10" of snow. How depressing.
But here I sit by the window with the curtains open gathering what little light I can get!
Great post...very true...!!

Wonderful post least.

At the end you said, "Let in the light." I'm so glad you chose to because now you are a beacon of light who lets it out; some of your posts require SPF 50.

What a great realization!

When drinking alone at home I used to have the curtains drawn too, and wouldn't answer the phone or answer the door if somebody knocked. Sad...

I used to love this verse from "Touch of Grey" (the Dead):

Dawn is breaking everywhere,
Light a candle, curse the glare
Draw the curtains - I don't care,
'Cause it's all right...

I so related to that attitude once - used to smile & sing it to myself. To open the curtains meant I was acknowledging "out there", and I wanted no parts of it. Now I open all the blinds - unafraid.

Thanks Least!

Thank you least! Great post. To the extent to which it's in our control to try to see gratitude and experience serenity, I absolutely agree with you!

And I relate 100% on the curtains thing.
