i was sober from 1988 to 2000. then i CHOSE to drink till today. i want to stop. i have a grandson on the way and my health can't get better. its not bad, but drinking at 55 can't help. i bike, kayak and hike. 1600 hiking miles last year. friends wish they had my life, but they don't know my dreams, or should i say nightmares. there is a meeting at 9:30 tomorrow. think i'll go. went to church last weekend and it was helpful. nobody cares if i drink or not. my FRIENDS would buy me a bottle in a second if i asked.

Welcome back Kayak - I think it boils down to you have to care if you drink or not.

I hope this time can be your time :)

Hi Kayak! Glad you are going for round 2! Sounds like whatever you were doing before must have worked..that is quite a sobriety run...do you remember your thinking when you chose to drink again? Did you have to talk yourself into it..or were you in a stuggle the whole time? Curious..

Sober from '88 to 2000. That is quite an accomplishment.

We have so much to learn from you....I do hope you'll stay and take us along your sober journey. Welcome Back!

Good luck Kayak. Yeah...it's up to us to get sober. Most of us have those people in our lives that would get us that bottle.

Hi

Congrats on the grandbaby.

I just wanted to tell you something about me to help with your fight against the booze.

I have a little girl. When she was born my partner left me. It was awful. She was so tiny and I was exhausted.
My own mother took it hard. She has always been a big drinker. But every night she rang me absolutely sloshed - shouting, slurring her words. Every morning she rang to apologise for her blackout drunk behaviour. I did not need it. I was tired from doing every night time feed myself.

I called her on it and eventually it got better. She now has my baby girl (with my dad) one day a week while I work.

However, I am reluctant to let her stay overnight. I don't think she knows that I see the hidden glass that she swears his just coke but really it has a massive vodka in it when she's about to bath my daughter.

My Dad on the other hand was a tower of strength.
He bought every single diaper I needed for a year.
He helped out with petrol when I needed it.
He cheered me up when I was down.
He took over 1,000 photo's of my little girl and put them on dvds for me.

In no way am I saying that it will be the same situation for your new grandbaby. What I am saying is DO NOT LET ANY OF THE PRECIOUS MEMORIES THAT WILL BE CREATED BY THAT BABY BE AFFECTED BY BOOZE. DO NOT LET THAT POISON TAINT THEM.

Be an awesome grandparent.

Get back into recovery and work it like your new grandsons life depends on it.

Now go get em Grandma!

xx

This just reminds me how we are never cured. Good for you though on the mega long period of sobriety. Best wishes to you, 90 in 90 won't hurt thats for sure...probably a great idea.
