Hi guys, what a great forum. I am/was a beer drinker (also daytime) for years 6.5 liters/day, Stopped now for almost 2 days, it's going ok, just dumped 6 liters of amstel beer in the toilet, the smell of the beer was so much sweeter that it made me quiver a bit. I stopped about 6 months ago for about 3 weeks, my problem seems to be keeping it up, I am sick and tired of this.
In the mean time I am going to do loads of reading here. Thanks in advance for sharing your experiences.

I'd encourage you to build a support network to help you through any tough times that might lie ahead. If AA is available to you, I would suggest looking into their meetings. Many of us with alcoholism have found that we are no match for this illness alone. There is a path out of where alcoholism has led us. Alcoholics Anonymous has a way out, and may be an option for you.
Welcome Muzzwell and kitty! I found this site the day I decided to stop drinking over 9 months ago. Haven't had a drink since.
There's lots of different people here that use numerous recovery programs to stay off the booze. There are tons of options available to help in your recovery. I hope you'll be able to find one that works for you.
Thanks for joining us, and please hang around a while. The wonderful people on this site have so much experience and support to share with all of us. Why not take advantage of such an awesome resource?

Welcome! Glad you're reaching out for support (this is a great place for it!). I couldn't quit on my own either - I don't know of very many people who can. Take it one day at a time and check in here often - it's an active place and people really talk in depth about staying sober.
Way to go on getting through the first two days!

Thanks guys for all of the encouragement. It is going well. You know just reading the first five responses yesterday evening (It is now 6am here in Holland) brought tears to my eyes. Great feeling. In fact I am already having many more thoughts then I would usually have. I slept well and had amazing dreams. Just that alone is enough for day 3. I have checked about AA in my area and it is here but in Dutch (I am a Brit) so I will have to phone today and see if my Dutch is good enough. They have segregated meetings here, Men and Woman in different groups. Is that normal? Also can anyone tell me if you are obligated to having a sponsor?
In the mean time I am feeling positive and physically better. Even my kids have noticed the difference. Thanks for the support.
