Hey guys, I am also new here. Today is my first day of embracing sober living. I am a drug addict with my choice of drug being cocaine. Nothing I have tried before has worked for me trying to live a sober life, including rehab programs. I was contemplating picking up maybe a self help book....can anyone recommend one for a recovering drug addict?
(((BrendaS))) and (((Timetochangeme))) - Welcome to SR!
Crack was my DOC (drug of choice) though I certainly abused alcohol and opiates before being taken down by crack.
I can't think of any self-help books, offhand, but I can tell you that being a member, here, has helped me tremendously and in a couple months, I'll have 4 years clean. Just knowing that others "get" what I've gone through, no judgment, just some great folks helping each other out.
Glad you're both here!
Hugs and prayers,
Amy

Welcome to you both.
Brenda, just tell us as much or as little as you're comfortable with for now. It'll be easier the longer you're here. I've been here almost three years and feel completely at home. I'm sure you'll come to feel at home here too. We're a good lot!

You're certainly not alone. There are millions of alcoholics and drug addicts in the U.S. and of course many more throughout the world.
We can and do recover. You can be living proof of that.
AA saved my life and removed the obsession to drink/use. ...but I'm not special, it can work for you too.
Keep posting on SR regardless of whatever recovery method you choose (if you decide to use one) and let us know how we can help.

Welcome guys. It all starts with a desire to stop. It appears you both have that. I am involved with AA so I am a definite believer in a 12 step program. I'm sure there are both AA and NA meetings in your respective areas.
As far as "how to start". I know this can be daunting at first. For me, it was to realize that things will get better. I arrived to a point where alcohol was no longer working for me but I could not understand how to stop drinking. The simple answer is to do just that. STOP. I'm not sure your levels of substance or alcohol use, so seeing a dr. would be another good idea. From there, just take things moment by moment. Try and start your recovery now. Participating in the is doing just that.
Hang in there guys. Things can be so much better than they are now.
