Battle Stations - it's Christmas Eve
I go to my inlaws in 4 or 5 hours.
Last Christmas Eve was a disaster - my wife's alcoholic cousin got loaded, and pressured me to drink, also, constantly, for 3 hours.
Thank God I had a glass of milk in front of me.
Last Saturday, he threw a 19th birthday party for his son. 19 = the legal drinking age here, in Ontario, Canada.
He got very drunk, and pressured my son to drink. My son has never drank, thank God, especially after seeing me with alcohol poisoning 5 times.
I pray that the meal goes well.
Happy holidays to everyone on SR.
Kelly

Your post topic made me think of sirens blarring and red warning lights flashing as if on a battleship Thanks for the laugh. I'll experience much the same thing tonight at my in-laws, except I'm normally the one drinking and pouring the drink for others. Hoping to have a fantastic meal and be in the background, playing with my 2 little ones for most of the night! Maybe no one will notice?
Hey Kellysad - I'm going to be visiting family too and will be the only one not drinking, except for my youngest daughter. I have this idea: I'm going to treat it like I'm an "Ambassador for Sobriety" - and can show everyone you don't have to drink to enjoy yourself! Like a mission I've been given.......
I think anticipating the whole thing is the worst part of it. When I actually am there, living in the moment, it's usually not as bad as I feared. I'm going to take my laptop, though, just in case I need to retreat and come to the forum.
Good luck - you can do it!!!

Kelly, your post made me think for a minute. It made me realize that *I* might very well have been the "alcoholic cousin" you speak of, but for MY family gatherings. That thought really bothers me. I always had the bottle of champagne ready, filling glasses for people (willing or unwilling). How did I know what people were going through? Maybe someone was really trying to cut back and not drink and there I was, practically pouring it down their throat. Wow, I really don't like my "drunk" self.
Thankfully I won't be that man tonight!

Merry Christmas Kelly and I know tonight will be a positive success for you. I have to also agree that probably at some point in my drinking years that I was probably that person too......refilling and what not. So grateful those days are behind me.
Happy holidays to you as well Kelly! Stay strong.
I'll be keeping you and all of the other folks struggling during this time of the year in my prayers.
If all else fails...
