Glad To Be Here
I'm glad I found this site. I've been clean since 9-10-10 from everything, but at the end it was mainly a horrendous 8 year long oxycodone addiction. After 7 days of a home CT detox (wouldn't recommend it - see a Dr.), I attended my first NA meeting. I've been going about 5-6 times a week ever since. I was beyond skeptical at first, but soon realized that I wanted to be like the guys that had many years clean. I'm finally feeling better, at least for a 42 year old guy with a 30 year history with just about everything that's bad for you. I have a great sponsor and am ready to surrender to recovery. It has been very difficult, but already worth the pain to feel this good. Just wanted to say hello.
Hello Squarehead,
How did this post slip so far down without a response. Our welcome crew must be sleeping in today.
Good story, and I think it sheds a really salient point. A person is not supposed to go to AA, NA or any other recovery because they really want to and it's fun. Some might, but i think more people go kicking and screaming, at least for a while.
It's fitting that what gives us pleasure in the short-term (drugs) hurts us so much in the long-run. Whereas what is miserable in the short-term (dragging one's feet to meetings) can be life-changing in the long-run.

Thanks everyone for the welcome.
Isaiah - I don't even know what made me go to my first meeting other than I knew I couldn't do it myself. That plan had failed too many times. Being an addict, of course I was looking for what kind of angle the group was working. Once I figured out that it was just a bunch of good people with the same issues as me, I bought in.
It's not for everyone, but for this addict and many others, it's working. It's just part of my story which luckily continues on.
