Looking ahead
Looking ahead
Hello all. I am new to this forum and my story is somewhat different. I don't drink, do drugs or smoke pot, I am not addicted to anything but cigarettes. That tells me that I do have an addictive personality. I have been suffering with chronic daily migraine headaches for 27 years. A few months ago I found headache specialist and he prescribed oxycodone, 15 mg X 2 a day as needed. They help, a lot.....but I am terrified of addiction. How do I make sure that does not happen. They are the only thing that will get rid of the headache for a day or 2. I am just looking ahead. Thanks for any advice you can give me.
Have you found the substance abuse forum yet? If not, take a read. Good info and support there.

"I don't drink, do drugs or smoke pot, I am not addicted to anything but cigarettes".
-FYI: Cigarettes cause more deaths than any other chemcial substance and are one of the most, if not the most, addictive substances there are. NIDA has wonderful information/research regarding substances so maybe you would benefit from checking it out.

I have taken every migraine med available....tried every preventative possible. Thats the only reason I am even given narcotics, I failed to respond to any other traditional treatment. I have taken pain meds before for injuries and surgery, but not on a regular bases or long term to get addicted. But now I have them and they really do take the pain away. I am able to function again. Of course I can't take them while I am at work, they make me loopy. But when my head hurts so bad, all I can do is cry like a baby....nothing else helps. I am really really scared, I don't want this to turn into something bigger. I have been reading about building tolerance and needing more and more. That just scares the **** out of me. I don't know what to do. My doc is very careful, he will not under any circumstances, refill early. But I will talk to him at my next appointment. Thank you again everyone. I will stick around and read some more.

Welcome to SR! I agree with others on discussing concerns with your Dr. Well done on being proactive and looking ahead. Something I wish I did many many years ago.
Lots of info here at SR and tons of support.

Thanks everyone. I have been reading and reading and reading. I am being very careful with the pills....took 1 last night after 3 days of hurting. I just have to make I use them responsibly and be aware of every single one until I can talk to my doc again. I have decided to stop smoking.....again, on Monday. The smoking forum will be very helpful, I am so glad I found it. Thanks again for all the advice and the warm welcome. I am off to introduce myself to the smoking forum.
