so futile to think having that drink is going to help me feel happy, or happ-ier, when all I have today is the overwhelming disappointment, depression, remorse, shame ..

I hear ya. Even though the physical were bad and sometimes outright awful, it was the mental and emotional ones that tended to last the longest.
Its good to wake up in the morning without remorse. Sober mornings are the best.

Slippery Slope, its that mindset that keeps us drinking. I would drink to get past the depression, shame, remorse etc, and then the next day it would be there all over again. Its really the dumbest thing, is you think of it with a rational brain. Unfortunately, when that trigger time comes around, all rational thoughts disappear
