Give it time to experience the gift
Hey everyone. After doing some meditation and talking to a friend, something dawned on me. For a long time when I first tried to get sober I thought that if I just quit drinking, everything would be OK. Well, it wasn't. There is so much more to being sober than just not drinking. It is learning how to deal with life without our old friend Mr. alcohol, and be happy about it.
It also dawned on me that I, for the longest time didn't give sobriety and recovery enough time to work and reveal to me how great of a gift sobriety is. I would quit drinking for a few days, and then something would come up and I would drink again. I would feel like I "gave sobriety a chance" and it wasn't that great and that I might as well drink again. It took me a long time to realize that the true joy and greatness of sobriety takes time. And that is exactly what we usually don't do; give our sobriety enough time to give it a chance.
After some sobriety now (over nine months) I now realize how much of a gift and how GREAT this gift of sobriety really is. I see how great life is, and can't wait for tomorrow to see what else this gift will give me.
The reason I am writing this is to hopefully inspire some of the newer people here. Please, give your sobriety a chance to show you how great it is. Don't give up before you experience it. It WILL happen. And you owe it to yourself to at least try.

So true! Thanks for posting. I have found the same thing in my sobriety. Life sober, as it turns out, is pretty amazing. Every once in a while I think about things like: My days focus on the positives instead of the negatives now, I havent had a day I regret since getting sober, and that I really like the person I am sober.
And, it keeps on getting better and better every day. Each day is a gift and realizing it makes the experience all that much more worthwhile.

What you said is so true and really important to remember. After reaching for an instant chemical fix every time we want to feel different, we have to learn to be patient. The rewards are so different, so natural feeling, and so much better than the fake happiness alcohol gives us.
