Enough Is Enough

Hello Everyone, I have been surfing around this site for the last 7 days since I stopped drinking and I like what I've seen.
I am 47 years old and have been drinking since I was in Junior High School. I know I have a problem with alcohol and have known for many years, the facts are there. What have I done about it? Not much. I like to drink. It hasn't really affected my life too much. Let me see:

-Dropped out of my first year of college because I was drinking everyday and failing classes.
-Joined the Military to help get my sh*t together.
-DUI at 23 years old but that wasn't my fault it was the stupid cops who had nothing better to do than stop me for running a red light.
-Being ordered to attend AA meetings once a week for one year and going during lunch hour so I wouldn't miss Happy Hour.
-Having my parents tell me I need help. Dad an alcoholic and Mom in Al-anon.
-Not spending time with the kids because I was too busy drinking.
-Getting divorced.
-Having my fiance tell me that if I don't chill out with the drinking we're going to have problems.

OK, maybe it has affected my life a little. Enough is Enough.

The last 7 days have not been that bad. No real withdraw except a little fog head. I have slept well and feel great in the morning. No real cravings just have to break the habits. No drinks when I get home from work. A lot of flavored water. Staying away from the triggers.

So far so good.

Great post, .....sounds like you still have a (self deprecating; sp?) sense of humor !

Hang in there, .....it's well, well worth it.

Hi 2GB - it's great that you have 7 days behind you and see what alcohol has done in your life. I'm glad you found your way here, too - it's the best place for 24/7 support. It helps me every day and there are days (like today) when it's a real lifeline.

Welcome 2 gold bars!

Well, you have done quite well for the first week, got your sh*t together, know why you needed to stop drinking. What can I say? Are you attending meetings or seeing a counsellor or something? Some of us haven't been able to go it alone, so just wondering. SR is a great place for support and we are all rooting for you!

Hey, GB,

Welcome, sounds like you're off to a good start. You can't expect to stay away from "triggers" forever, though, for some funny reason they have a way of finding US.

Why not give AA another shot? Maybe you weren't able to relate to it when you went before, but what you hear in the rooms just might resonate this time. The face-to-face support on an ongoing basis is very helpful to me.

I went to AA for one meeting and didn't go back for 5 years. Then I tried again 6 months ago and haven't had a drink since- maybe things would be different.

You are in the right place here though welcome 2GB

Welcome.

Do you have a plan? I tried AA several years ago and it didn't do anything for me. Now, 6 years later I've tried it again, and I "get it now" and it's working for me.
