Eighteen Months Today
Hi SR -
Today I celebrate 546 days sober. For me, one of the best learnings from my sobriety has been to focus on today and to stay present. The amount of sober time that I have is meaningless, but the fact that I have been more present in my life (and others) and I have been able to grow during these 546 days - that is the real success.
For anyone who has read the 12 steps, you will notice that "alcohol" is only mentioned in the first one. The rest of the steps have very little to do with alcohol -- but instead with how to live a generally fulfilling life and be a decent person.
I didn't realize how much this change in attitude and thinking would impact my life. I now have the tools to live and this makes alcohol unnecessary. For this I am so grateful.
Similarly, the ability to listen and learn from others, and every now and then, to help another, is also critical to the success of my program. For this, SR has played a significant role -- and so thanks to all of you.
I am no more cured today than I was at day 1. My alcoholism has progressed while in my sobriety - a silent enemy - waiting for my alcoholic thinking to take over again. All I've got is today - right now in fact.
I am grateful to be here with all of you.
To those still suffering, I don't have a silver bullet. It is really about actively working a program of recovery - every day. For me, this is a combination fo AA + SR + Helping other alcoholics. But for the work, the rewards are amazing.

Congrats and thank you so much for sharing. You are so right about making change. That is why recovery is so important.
You inspire me friend and you input in the SR community is greatly appreciated.

Nice one mate!! 18 months is a great milestone!!
Really good post too. The tools are there to live a fullfilling and rewarding life free from alcohol but always aware that one drink would take everything away. Once an alkie always an alkie.

Congrats......very inspiring...I've made it to 17 days....today is my 18th day......just trying to keep busy......small graving, but your post has helped alot. I'm staying strong. SR you rock.........
