Thumbs up TOPIC: Music & Recovery - K.D. Lang sings Leonard Cohen's Hallelujah

Hi Im Sharon and Im an Alcoholic.

By the Grace of my HP and people
like you here in SR I havent found
it necessary to pick up a drink of
alcohol since 8-11-90.

For that and you I am truely grateful.

From early on when i returned
home from rehab I found music
as a gift to help restore my mind
and heart to sanity.

We go thru many stages in recovery
where we grow and change. Like
a caterpillar that mophs into a
lovely butterfly.

There are many things we can
use to help us enjoy the rough
spots in our recovery as we take
each step at a time.

Whether it be music, exercise,
volunteer work, crafts ect.

Over the yrs. i can look back
and remember how music lifted
my spirits when i was low.

Today music still stands firm.

Question.....How many of you
have heard this song?

Leonard Cohen's Hallelujah

It's beautiful isnt it?

Im not sure how to bring the
song here to you to hear it.
If u do and would like to add
it so many of us can hear it
hear, id appreciate it.

Many artists have song it like
K.D. Lang and many dancers
have danced to it.

Who is ur favorite artist to
sing this song?

I like Leonard's version... although I am a huge fan of k.d. lang and her cover is excellent, and of course Jeff brought that song mainstream...

Sharon... Check out Madeline Peyroux's cover of Leonard Cohen's "Dance Me to the End of Love"... It leaves me speechless, still, and I've listened to it dozens of times... I'd buy you the song on iTunes if I could!

Whatever is going on with

confusion, struggles, one
can listen to this song and
give you peace and strength

each time i hear it. How about

"Music hath power to soothe the savage breast" ('savage' in this case meaning 'heaving' as in crying/upset.) When I get upset or sad or anxious I listen to my main man Mozart and it helps me calm down and feel better. Music does have great power when we feel bad.

kd lang owns Hallelujah now. I remember the Canadian songwriter's Hall of Fame when she sang it. Leanard Cohen was beaming. Ann Murray had this look on her face like, "Why can't I sing like that?"

John Cale

Funny enough although we now accept Hallelujah as written by Leonard Cohen the version everybody knows is a version assembled from about 15 pages of lyrics written by Leonard Cohen by Velvet underground member John Cale who claimed to have picked only the cheekiest ones.

Here is his version:

Mark, I had not heard her
album....Ill have to go check
it out. Thank you.

I woke up this morning and
the song Hallelujah poped in
my head after hearing it the
day before.

I sat down to coffee and thoughts
of i wonder how many versions
of that song is out there in the
world.

Didnt Adam Lambert sing it last
year on American Idol?

To move on, i googled the song
to see who sang it and there it
was on the first page with KD Lang
and her version of it.

I clicked and heard it......WOW
soooooo pretty.

That song just filled me up
with tingly emotions. Maybe
because i love pretty music.

And it was a huge part of my
early recovery and very much
today.

Hope that song make u feel
good too.

They just played
Hallelujah on
America's Got Talent.

It was from a group
playing it for their home
town of Haiti.

They were good and
very much inspiring.

So good that they
made it thru to Vegas.
