A power greater than ourself When we saw others solve their problems by a simple reliance upon the Spirit of the Universe, we we had to sop doubting the power of GOD. Our ideas did not work. But the GOD idea did. Page 52 of the Big Book. It is imparative that we come to believe in a Higher Power no matter what we choose to call it, a Group Of Drunks, Good Orderly Direction, Ala, Buda. Just as long as we have a power greater than ourselves. |
Hmm, nope. I don't believe in a "Higher Power" in the sense that AA tells you to, and my sobriety's just fine. :) To each his own, eh? |
We can choose A.A. does not tell us what or who we have to call a Higher Power, that is up to us. It is not hard to believe that there has to be something or someone out there that made our blue skies, deep oceans, and life on this planet. Even the Big Bang therory ( sorry cant spell ), according to scientist , is hard to explain. Believing in YOUR Higher Power is what is important. And if that still doesn't help you, your welcome to use mine for as long as you like. |
Welcome to SR Louie We're a big diverse bunch here with a lot of different paths to sobriety - we're all on the same side though :) I'm sure you'll fit in just fine :) D |
For a while my two dogs were my higher power. Worked for me.:) |
I don't worry about what my higher power 'is.' It just is. That's what works for me. If that makes any sense. |
Someone in a meeting I attend has been praying to his wardrobe for over ten years! |
I think my ancestors are my HP. Ancestors in Japan is like guardian angels in Christianity. |

Least, that's great! I haven't been able to identify my HP and thought about making it my dogs, but I thought my sponsor would think that was silly. :) GG |

Dgillz, I want to discuss my HP with my sponsor. I am not religious, wasn't raised with religion and have a hard time envisioning that power greater than myself that I can connect with, so we talk about it a lot when we meet. It's currently "Fate" or my dead grrandmother, depending on my mood. GG |
As soon as you accept that the universe is matter expanding into a nothing that is something, then accepting that you aren't the highest power is easy. (paraphrasing Einstein) :) |
I'm open to a HP. |
Every plant that breathes. Every blade of grass that bends. Every wave that breaks. This is my higher power. |

A power greater than myself? The Universe is FULL of such powers... |

Someone in a meeting I attend has been praying to his wardrobe for over ten years! Hey! Shirley Valentine talked to the wall! I don't think it's imperitive to have a HP - I think the point is that alcoholism is soooo self-absorbing that you need to externalise. I am increasingly believing in "The Secret". Again, not a higher power but simply that you get what you believe you will. Works for me! Others want to call that "God". Works for them! :DA |
There's lots of stuff greater than me, but I don't use 'it'/'them' in my recovery... no need. To each his/her own :) |
