New here...Day 5

This is my 5th day sober. I've been shocked over the past 5 days how often I actually think about having a drink during the course of a day! Physically, I am starting to feel a bit better. Still feeling bloated/puffy, but the anxiety is less intense. My drinking has been a problem at various stages of my life with long periods of sobriety in between. However, for the past four years things have become progressively worse. I didn't drink every night but when I did drink I was consuming a bottle of wine + the best part of a fifth of vodka, sometimes more. I'm tired of feeling physically and mentally crappy, anxious, and like a terrible mom. I've read a lot of your posts and I very inspired. Thanks for being here.

Welcome to SR poprocks
It was progressive for me too.

Coming here and doing something about it was actually pretty cathartic - a huge weight off my shoulders

Good to have you with us!

Canada rocks!

Try reaching out for help...counselling, AA, family support, all of the above! Works for me! You don't have to do this alone.

Welcome to SR!!! You have a great community of supportive people who understand you and tons of useful info and resources.

Progressive seems to be a common word here since alcoholism is progressive. I started socially and when I hit a really bad snag in my life....well I turned towards it for a quick fix. Had no clue that it would consume me for about 10 years of my life. Guess I had to live it and now that I am sober.....yeah life is full of doozies but are handled for more eloquently (if you will) through sobriety.

The days get better friend. My anxiety was wicked when I drank....and was rough those early days but each day a little bit more of me shined through and less of the negatives.

Stay strong....keep posting and looking forward to your journey

poprocks - good job on 5 days sober! Just take it a day at a time and focus on how great it feels to get up in the morning without a hangover. I've had periods of sobriety, too, but kept going back to it. Getting through the first week or two isn't easy, but you can do it!!:day6

Congrats on 5 days.

Thinking about drinking a lot (in the early days of recovery) is very typical.

Just think about how much additional productivity you will have once you are through this period and you stop being consumed with these thoughts!

It does happen and it will -- but please don't do it alone.

Actively work on a program of recovery. For me, this made all the difference.
