Hi everyone,
I really don't know what to say. I've struggled with various addictions for 15 years now and it seems that the best I can do is exchange one addiction for another. At the moment, it's alcohol. I know that I need to give it up, that it's doing me no favours mentally or physically, but I'm afraid that, as usual, I'll quit and just default back to self-injury as usual.
My first goal is to get to Friday without alcohol.

Welcome.
Yesterday is gone forever.
Tomorrow isnt here yet
and may never arrive.
However, all i have is today.
Just For Today
One moment. One minute
at a time. That's it.
If u stay in the day then
u will eventually see minutes
turn into hours. Hours into
today. Then days into months
and so on.
My recovery time is based on
a whole bunch of one days at
a time collected together.
That's it.
Keeping It Simple.

Welcome to SR Sleepflower.
I replaced alcohol with the addiction of going to the gym everyday and that is what works for me. Give it a try. It can't hurt. At least not too much, although I do enjoy the pain involved from lifting weights.

Hi and welcome.
I too have two addictions and use one to replace the other. Now I use neither. I found the answer in working the 12 step program of Alcoholics Anonymous.
Would you consider going to a meeting?

Welcome!!
Sobriety isn't the easiest thing to start with, I know, but once you get going and work it, it's better than I could have possibly imagined. Hang around here at SR, read what people are posting, and find your support path! You took the right step by posting here, follow it up with more.

Hi Sleepflower,
I'm glad you found us and that you recognize that you have a problem with addiction. I think it takes a lot of looking inward and dealing with issues. The drinking (or other addiction) is the symptom of the underlying problems.

AASharon said it well. Let your mantra become Just for Today. Stay with
today and today will spread its wings to become your cherished yesterday.
i have been doing "just for today" for 34 days, and at last i can see the sun
coming up over the horizon...

I concur, stay in the day, the hour, or even the minute, just keep in mind that tomorrow never comes, we can only live life today only so we simply do not drink today. Have you considered AA or some other face to face program? No need doing this alone when one does not need to.
Glad you found us, Sleepflower. After 25+ years of heavy drinking I finally admitted willpower alone was never going to do it for me. I needed the support of SR - and some may need to work a program. As Taz said, no need to do this alone. There's a huge comfort in knowing it isn't just you against the world.
You can learn to live again without the poison. It feels strange in the beginning, but you won't stay on square one forever. You'll begin to heal and feel part of the world again. Please let us know how you are. Posting and reading here saved my life.

Welcome to SR, Sleepflower ~
Your avatar and signature says alot.
I've been where you are and felt the same way. Breaking goals down into smaller chunks (ie, one day, hell, even one hour) can be more manageable at first and is an awesome achievement.
Recovery is worth it. You are worth it.
You're with people who understand. Glad you found us.
