Oh yes! I still have drinking dreams occasionally. And now that I've quit smoking, I've had horrendous smoking and drinking dreams! I can wake up and laugh now, because dreams are the only place I could ever drink 'safely'. It's not abnormal at all. I mean, it's not abnormal for me...

I very rarely dream at all (or I don't remember it)....for a while I was in the weird pattern...I would fall asleep, go directly into some terrible nightmare, wake-up after only being asleep for 45 mins....I was so terrified, my heart was pounding, shaking...of course the first thing I did was run for a drink (to calm me so i could get back to sleep)....at this point i was only sleeping maybe 2-3 hours a night on a regular basis....

I read somewhere that I was so "sleep deprived" that when I did doze off, my brain went crazy....

since I started sleeping with no wine lullaby, I am just asleep, can't remember a thing, there is a vague wisp here and there, but nothing i can (or want to) remember.

Absolutely, I have the occasional dream when I am so drunk, I can barely stumble from room to room, then wake up sober in a cold sweat... They do not happen too often, but I think most ex-drinkers get them to some extent. A Dr. explained it once to me that alcohol suppresses REM sleep and when you stop drinking, your dreaming mind has what's called "rebound dreams", all the dreams its been storing up, come pouring out.

Yes, Ozy I had them - especially the first few months I was sober. I'd even have phantom hangovers with a dry mouth & slight headache. I'd prop myself up in bed and panic - thinking - what have I done? It would take a few minutes to come to my senses and realize I hadn't had anything. After awhile those dreams stopped. Sorry you were troubled, my friend!

I am also pretty new to sobriety and I also have been having dreams about alcohol and drinking. Just last night I had a dream that I was so drunk and in a train station in another city - I didn't know where I was going and I was so drunk that no one could understand me when I tried to ask for help.

When I quit pot awhile back I used to have dreams ALL the time of getting high..when I woke up it felt so weird. It started off like once a week..then once a month, then after about 6 months they went away. I think it's because we think about drinking/smoking so much during the day(even if its just in the back of our heads)..then it just surfaces when we sleep.

Hey man

I have had a few before, the ones that i didn't like so much were the ones where i woke up and for a couple of seconds though the dream was real.

On one occasion i dreamed that i had been out to the casino, got thrown out drunk and lost all my little money i had left...it was so real that i shot up inbed and looked for the tell tale sign of the trail of clothes strewn across the floor that i would leave and it wasn't there...

Another occasion i had dreamed that i had been at a wedding and was trying to socialise and someone gave me a beer and i said no i didn't drink, then in the dream it was later on in the night and i was drinking a beer and thinking it's ok i've only had 2 and i woke up in a panic, saying no not again...it was a dream!

The most horrible thing about these kind of dreams is the 'pain' inside that i felt for a couple of seconds around the heart area, i guess despair would be the right description of the 'pain'?!

I didn't have hardly any this time round going to AA, my theory is that i had something to hang onto to in the early days and i wwasn't left relying on myself who i absolutely did not trust anymore at all...

Either way they are just dreams though and 16 days is a real good start:-)

I know its been said a number of times at this point, but that's a very common occurance amongst ex-addicts/alcoholics. When I was in rehab last year the guy I was rooming with was coming off of meth, and he had drug dreams that were so realistic he would cry uncontrollably for about a half an hour every time he woke up from one. He said he was just so full of shame in the dream that it took that long for the feelings to subside once he woke up from them.

My alcoholic dreams have been very realistic, but I don't get the feelings of guilt and shame when I wake up. Like somebody else said earlier in the thread, I'm the type that kind of enjoys being in that moment while I can be since I'm no longer allowed to feel that way when I'm awake. But to sum it up, good or bad, those dreams are certainly to be expected. The most sober time I've had in 10 years was only the 32 days I was hospitalized, but I was still having the dreams when I returned home and began drinking again. I have 11 days currently. This is my first attempt to stop drinking since I returned home from rehab over a year ago. My alcoholic dreams haven't started yet, but I look forward to them. Just another hurdle to cross into a life of sobriety. Guess thats my 2 cents...

I had a dream I was at a party and someone gave me cider and I drank it - I was so upset with myself!!! then I dreamt my partner was drink driving and I asked him to pull over so I could drive and he said no - I was so mad that I actually sat up in bed and punched him (apparently) - he asked me this morning what I was dreaming about and he laughed and told me what I had done!

I had a drinking dream lat night. It was startling because it seemed so real! I woke up and thought, "I just blew 99 days! Oh, it was a dream."

I've had those dreams too. I'd have them *all the time* when I was pregnant. Most of the time it was only 1/4 or 1/2 a glass of wine, but I would get so mad at myself in my dream for blowing it and putting my baby's health at risk when I was working so hard at staying abstinent. Sometimes I'd even wake up and think that I had slipped. But eventually I realized I was too committed to my baby's health to actually take a drink and soon I recognized that they were dreams even while still dreaming.
