I've fallen, but I can get up

Staying sober seems easy one day and then impossible another. My first attempt lasted 2 months, then I fell. The next day I got back up and went for 4 1/2 months. But I've fallen again yesterday. Now I'm back up again, but I'm tired of letting down those who care about me and count on me. I hope it lasts this time and somehow begins to get easier. Not having an excuse for why I drank is the hardest part. The guilt, remorse are high. But, I must stay strong. Wish me luck.

Are you doing anything but white knuckling it??

Hi and Welcome,

I don't think you need luck.

You can stay sober and move forward with your recovery. I would ask you what changes you made in your life, besides stopping drinking, during the times when you were sober? There may be things that you can do and change that will help you recover.

I work the program, but obviously not hard enough. I'll try greater focus and plan for greater results.

Welcome to SR! :) Yes, you CAN 'get up' and get back on the wagon again. I'm glad you're trying again. I tried and failed too many times, but always tried again. There is no shame in failing as long as you keep trying. :)

Thanks for your kind words.

I agree with Anna - not drinking will get you sober, but it takes more than just not drinking to stay sober :)

I think your plan for greater focus on your programme is a good one.

I remember watching Maid in Manhattan, and heard the following quote, which for some reason has stayed stuck in my head:

"What defines us is not what we do, but how well we rise after falling."

Keep rising, you can do it!
