Hello everyone,

I have posted a couple threads about my sponsor who took me under his wing and took me to my first AA meeting 86 days ago today. The time he spent with me and what he has done for my life can not be described, but I will just sum it up by saying this man is the reason I am sober today.

But anyways, his cancer got the best of him last night as he passed away. He showed us how to live, to laugh, to care, and ultimately how to die. His faith and 30 years of sobriety never wavered as he left us all too early at the age of 59. As I told my wife last night that he passed away, she started to cry. I asked her why, and this is what she said: "I only met him once for 15 seconds, but he not only saved you, he saved our family."

This would sum up the life of the man who helped change the life of me and hundreds of others in his short time on this earth.

How wonderful for this man to be remembered with such loving words.

What an amazing post. I'm so sorry for your loss but I know your friend is in a much better place now. What a wonderful life he must have led - helping people and saving lives.

Thank you for the reminder to remember the importance of the people who are a daily part of life. Every relationship has the power to teach us something about ourselves and the world in which we live. They are there if we are open to them.

What a great thing, that he touched so many lives, helped people, showed people.
And such a sad thing that he is gone so early.

My sincerest condolances on his passing.

I was blessed in spending about an hour with an old timer the day before he passed Bdiddy, he resembled your sponsor except he was in his early 90s. Like you sponsor he showed me & many others in AA how to leave this world!

What an extraordinary man! How blessed you were to have crossed and intersected paths with him. We only wish we could effect someone's life, but this man effected numerous people's life. Quite a testimony.

Thank you bdiddy. My goodness, he looks so good. He did something so important with the life he was given. How proud he'd be to see what you shared with us.

Wow, biddy. How cool, the double-thumbs up, but what really strikes me in looking at your sponsor's picture is his genuine smile and the look of serenity in his eyes.

sorry for your loss,...I too lost a friend to cancer...my tears were because he past sober,....I know in my heart he's home now and I thank my higher power for allowing him to be a part of my life.

Sounds like he walked the talk. Some memories and example to truly pay back to others.

Thank you everyone. His funeral is tomorrow. It will be tough, but manageable. I just thought of one other thing. As some of the other AA guys went up to see him in the hospital, he said something truly amazing. He said he is going up to the big meeting in the sky. He said he was in charge of the topic! haha. One of the guys asked him what the topic was going to be, and his response was: "gratitude." How amazing is that?!?! He said he will be saving us all a front row seat for when we get up there.
