? re: supporting someone in rehab
 

My boyfriend went to rehab two weeks ago. They transferred him to a dual diagnosis center for 30 days. He is allowed phone privileges and has encouraged me to call him whenever I can/want to...but is this in his best interest? He shares about his day, etc. Which seems harmless enough, and all I've done is listen and echo back or affirm his efforts. Anyone have any input? I am hesitant to call him because I don't want to provide any distractions.

Supporting his efforts in phone calls seems innocent enough to me. As long as you don't give him any bad news or anything that might upset him or his recovery. When I was in rehab I looked forward to phone calls to family. And they were very supportive of my efforts toward sobriety. Unless there's something I'm missing, I think it could be helpful for him to have your support and to be able to talk to you.
