Just wanted to say hey and get some information on where to start :)

Hello everyone,
This is my first attempt at reaching out and finding answers about my alcohol use and the problems I've been experiencing with it as of recently. About two years ago I began drinking heavily as a way of coping with a rough break up that I was going through. Although the effects of the break up have long been gone I continued to drink in excessive amounts. It never occurred to me that it might actually be an issue until recently. I've done a little research on alcoholism and it's effects and have reason to believe I might be suffering from it. For example, my appetite is almost non existent, I have trouble sleeping, experience excessive sweating, and my moods are up and down. I'm also going through a rough patch with a girl I've been dating for sometime now which has also left me feeling depressed/anxious at times which doesn't help. I'm scared that my alcohol use will negatively effect both me and my relationships with friends, family, and significant other and so I've come here for help. Any and all advice is welcome. Thanks

Hi Al

Welcome to SR.

I started my drinking career in much the same way - I outdrank most of the things I started drinking for.

I can;t say whether you're an alcoholic or not - but if you think your drinking is a problem, it probably is.

There's many self diagnostic tests available. This is one.

It's not meant to be definitive but it may help you decide where you are.

You'll find a lot of support here Al - keep posting

Welcome to SR, for most folks who show up here it seems as though if you think you may have a problem with drinking you do have a problem with drinking and quitting for good is important because if you are an alcoholic it will always get worse with every drink & never better, not does it level off.

Here is another link with a test to help one self determine if one is an alcoholic or not http://www.aa.org/lang/en/subpage.cfm?page=71

Welcome. I have always thought my drinking wasn't normal. While it wasn't always out of hand i.e. passing out every night, I was always questioning it. It took me almost 30 years before I fully admitted it was a problem. That's when I tried and looked for many ways that were right for me. This year I found SR and haven't regretted a single moment. You made a wise choice.
