If I could've stopped drinking with self-determination alone, I wouldn't be here asking for help.

So what's your point?

True.. it's you and you alone that stops.
No one can "stop for you"
And no one pours a drink down you. You do that yourself.
Others can help but in the end it is you that has to do it.
You...

I agree. If I could stay sober with self-determination I would have succeeded at least once in the first thousand times I tried to quit on my own.

I do agree that self-knowledge has something to do with recovery, but it is the kind of self-knowledge that comes from surrender and humility - not self-determination.

"To thy self be true" means learning what our hidden motives are and what our delusions are blocking us from.

I read self-determination like commitment.

I agree with one caveat - I am committed to the effort but detached from the results. Self-determination is what kept me attached to the results and therefore attached to self-centeredness.

Another way to think of it is that self-determination means taking responsibility. I got myself into this mess, and it's my job and mine alone to get myself out - and if humbling myself and asking for and accepting help is part of what I have to do to solve this problem, then it's my responsibility to swallow my pride and do exactly that.
