New here...

Been lurking for a while but decided it was time to join! Reached the point where the drinking is taking control. I am tired of waking up feeling guilty about what I did last night! I am ashamed by my actions and the way I act around people when I drink! It has gone on too long and it ends today! I hope that I can beat this and try to make up for the way I have been.

Hi and Welcome,

Guilt and shame play such a large role in addiction, and they can keep us from recovering, too. Know that you can do this, and I hope you keep reading and posting.

Thank you for your share.

I am ashamed also. The 5th step states: Admitted to God, to ourselves, and to another human being the exact nature of our wrongs. I was an alchoholic, self centered, ***** monger. My wife and children suffered the associated concequences of my actions. I am completely ashamed of my actions. It is a miracle that they still speak to me. I will rot in hell. I will spend the rest of my life making amends to them.

The first law of addiction states that if you pick up, you will end up where you left off. Withdrawal symptoms only last for 3 minutes, and decrease in frequency as time progresses. It takes only 3 days to metabolize any drug out of you system. I can not pick up. I can not handle being a practicing alchoholic. I will go through life with optimism, hope and courage. I will not pick up one day at a time. I hope that all is well with you. Best regards. Dan.

Welcome! I had to 'do all I can' too, and it sure wasn't easy.. but I figured I'd put a hell of a lot of energy into staying drunk, the least I could do for myself is put the same amount into getting and staying sober. Best stuff I've ever done in my life.

I'm glad you're here

" Withdrawal symptoms only last for 3 minutes,"

To clarify; the URGE to drink only lasts a few minutes. The acute withdrawal last a few DAYS. Just want to clarify for any newbies going thru withdrawal that the withdrawal itself only lasts a few days..

Congratulations on a great decision!! You know, you will have to forgive yourself. You can't change the past. But you are embarking on a terrific new future, and you've found a great, supportive place to launch.

Thanks everybody! Looking forward to the journey. Was able to quit tobacco use 4 years ago with the support of a group like this.

Welcome newbie

I am on day 3 - my acute tack of desire won't kick in until 2 or 3 weeks from now. This is my key time to watch for. I am doing ok right now...by keeping busy writing to SR.

One day at a TIME...

to wildman

Welcome Wildman,

Just to be able to wake up without shame or guilt from the last episode is more than worth quitting, besides all the health benifits and other "perks".
Good luck we are here for you, its not easy but its sure as heck worth it.

Least,
Have to shout out to your post cuz my dogs are the only thing I live for sometimes through the shame and depression. I think they are the reason somehow I am still here. But at times, I do find them more understanding than mankind!
