Non-alcoholic beer = starting over?
for me, its not alcohol,, so who cares.... anything that helps get you through...so be it... i dont understand the sponsors reaction to begin with..however i also dont go to AA so maybe im missing something
Yep, totally boils down to your own decision about your sobriety.
I wouldn't drink NA beer, because I know it has alcohol in it.. I don't care the amount, it's a beer, with some alcohol.. neither of which I drink anymore.
A lot of people drink it in place of the "real deal" and never fret the sober date issue.
Totally a personal deal, whatever feels best to YOU in your heart of hearts is the best thing for you.
Keep on truckin!

I think it's important here to bring up AA sponsors
hopefully ...... to clarify.....
.
. There is an official AA guideline for sponsrship.
You can find "Questions and Answers on Sponsorship"
in most meetings on the free literature rack.
Before anyone decides to choose an AA sponsor
I certainly hope they will find out exactly what is a sponsor.
The panphlet is quite interesting ..IMO
Lets all enjoy another day of winning over alcohol...

I really appreciate all of the responses.
Last night was an emotional roller coaster between the two calls with my sponsor. I was all over the map: thinking about never going to AA again, going and never picking up any chips again, firing my sponsor, etc.
You guys really helped me sit tight and wait to talk to her before jumping the gun and possibly drinking. I was so mad.
I needed to be reeled in.

Only one more thing.....
Not all groups give chips to denote sober time.
Even if your home group chooses to do so....
you never have to pick one up.
It's a personal choice.
I've not been to the April Anniversary Night
in 10 years and I'm still an active member.

My experience with NA beer is this.
From 2002 to 2005, i was in and out of the progam and the most i quit for was for six months. I would put in 30 days, then drink, then 45, etc. I think i drank NA beer every night during those periods. Just a few because i love the taste of beer.
I remember during the NFL AFC NFC championships, i actually put down around 11 of them.
I can tell you from my experience- I NEVER EVER had a buzz in any way. Never felt more relaxed, or anything. It just tasted good.
In 2005, i quit for 6 months without drinking the NA beer. I just thought that it would help if i could just forget the taste of beer somehow.
Now, i have about 6.5 months w/ no drinking of NA beers at all again.
I did buy non-alcoholic beer once, then opened the bottle, and decided that since there is .5 in it, maybe i sshould not drink it because of that.
that is just me.
Drinking to me, is drinking a real beer, doing a real shot, drinking real wine.
Drinking a non-alcoholic beer is not a case of giving into alcohol. YOu do not lose your sobriety. Even though, i decided to stay away from any amount, even th3e .5 percent.
I am tired of typing now. !

i've been drinking beck's non-alcoholic beer. 0% alcohol. says so on the bottle. there are others that have .5% in them, those i steer clear of. make sure it says 0% on the bottle. i missed the taste of beer & the 'ritual' of celebration so the odd saturday night since i quit drinking, i've picked up a 6 pack of non-alcoholic beer (becks makes pretty good stuff i think) and i definitely wouldn't consider myself back to square one. because it doesn't contain alcohol. plain and simple. it's a fizzy drink w/ hops and barley flavour in it. that's all. it is what it is.
my 2 cents anyway. like others have said, i guess it depends on intent plus i don't feel that drinking the non-alcoholic beer makes me feel like drinking the real deal. a couple of weekends ago we had my fiancees cousins over and they brought a 12 pack of budweiser. my fiancee had our 6 pack of 0% becks. it made socializing with the drinkers easier. whatever works, right?

A lot of good input has been given concerning the original topic. But this side topic comes up frquently enough I felt compelled to weigh in, for what it's worth.
I don't have any opinion on anyone else's use of NA beer. But I've noticed a trend with this topic. With a few exceptions, it's almost always someone within their first few months of sobriety that advocates drinking NA beer. Look around at the people on this site with long term sobriety and see how many of them drink NA beer. I can think of a couple, but most do not.
Why is that? Maybe lots of different reasons. The one I'll bring up, just for consideration, is that maybe if I'm not willing to give up this one tiny thing that may or may not affect my sobriety, what else am I not willing to do for my sobriety?
It doesn't matter how far along I am in recovery, it's those lengths I'm not willing to go to that will bite me in the arse.

Wow! You have to get a specific Becks beer. there is Becks Hauke .3% and there is Becks 0%. NOW, i acutally bought bEcks .3% and backed away from it. I WOULD DRINK BECK 0%. ABSOLUTELY. anything else, no.
I am going to look this stuff up and find out where it is and go pick some up!!

Any beverage that is labeled "non alcoholic" must contain less than .05% alcohol because it's regulated by the FDA (food and drug administration) and not the ATF (alcohol tobacco and firearms)
Per the FDA anything that wishes to classify itself as "Non Alcoholic" is required to post the "Less than .05%" on the label. The FDA states that less than .05% is considered non alcoholic whether it's a beverage or peanut butter. If you are going to call your product "non alcoholic" you must post the criteria on the label.
Remember, just because the law states you must post .05% on the label means nothing. Your product may have .00001% if not 0.0000% yet you still have to post .05% per the law if you are going to call your product as such.
You may not call it "Beer" either. Nowhere on any label anywhere does it say "Beer"! It's a "Non Alcoholic Malt Beverage", not beer.
There is more alcohol in grape jelly yet they don't have to list the .05% because they do not label the jelly as "Non Alcoholic Grape Jelly"
Therefore, my favorite drink was Bourbon and Seven. Do I need to go get a white chip every time I drink a Seven Up?
