First Grocery Store Run
Welcome! Am only on Day 8 so I feel for your sense of "newness" and also can relate to being the supposed successful upstanding person that people just laugh off your drinking - especiallly family members. Glad for you at a much younger age than I, taking action. The booze aisle is a bugger. I dutifully on day 3 went to Walmart to buy bottled water - and yes, it was housed right next to the beer and wine. How thoughtful of them. Hang in there....you're worth the effort you're going through to put your "house in order".
Welcome Malcoms
I'm one of those old guys... I got serious with alcohol though only in the last 4-5 years... Thankfully, as long as I continue my recovery, I still have my life essentially intact, albeit a bit battered, bruised and bewildered.
I don't know what your future holds... but if you keep on the path you are on... black outs, shots of whiskey in the morning, it won't be bright.
Don't compare yourself with others, just look for similarities in people's message.... And learn to live one day at a time.... You have a graduate degree, good job.... You can have a wonderful life.
Welcome to SR.... BTW, I am little over a year sober, the neon signs and beer aisles, they really hold little power over me now... although I don't think I'd be cooking with that much wine, well, none, usually.... but I don't freak out if my wife uses 2 tbsp of cooking sherry in her tetrazinni..
