I can't do it on my own.

Ron

Me either.

Despite my isolating ways it turns out we are social animals.....It's a pain I know but we need each other to stay sober and do life. Fortunately for us we are not the first people to go through this. There are many people who have been here done this and are now more then willing to help.

Welcome to SR.

Keep posting your feelings and letting us in, and the crappola out, K? It's not about only "me" or only "you". It's about "US" & getting thru it together, K? Hang in there! Lot's of hugs and prayers goin' your way! xxxx, Nicki

Look in the center of your heart and see God forging a lighted pathway for you. He will carry you when you falter and can't walk, he has helped me get through 7 days now and I know the light gets brighter. I fervently look forward to the day I am clean. It is tough and there are many many people on this site with stories and support to help you through. They have me. Think of the high you will get off Victory. Nothing more natural than that.

Hi Ron. I tried for years to do it on my own & always failed miserably. My friends here helped me through the scariest time of my life. When I realized I wasn't alone I got the courage I needed to lay it down. You can do this, Ron - I did it after 25 yrs. of heavy drinking.

Dee74 10-08-2009 07:31 PM

I hear of the Lone Wolf types - but in my experience noone ever does it on their own...
a support network is vital Ron.

5 days is still pretty early too - I was just stopping feeling bad by 5 days...I sat myself in a chair and sat here and read and posted...I got through.

There are easier face to face support ways too LOL - AA, SMART, LifeRing...counselling, outpatient programmes....

Dunno if you've seen this link - might give you something to go on

None of us can afford not to do it Ron - don't give up :)

Sitting here with a beer and have not opened it. Just can't take the withdrawals, Kicking my ass. I don't want to drink that beer, but I know I will feel relaxed if I do. Pure Agony! Don't suggest cold Turkey!!!!!!

Will you really feel more relaxed Ron?
will it really be just one?
will it be worth it?
or will you find yourself back at square one a few days, a week, a month from now?

I figure there's got to be less dangerous ways to relax, Ron.
Stop playing the wheel on this one, mate.

Dump the beer.

I couldn't do it on my own. I had to go to detox and that was the scariest time of my life and I was getting off pills. Once I got there it was wonderful, there was people there who were just like me, when I felt so alone. There are people here just like us. That one beer will lead you to the next one and then bam you are back in that same boat and feel worse. Keep coming back, WE can do this.

Absolutely not. If you're drinking heavily and have had significant withdrawal symptoms stopping before, you absolutely need to work with a doctor in some way to safely quit. Please.

rondfw777 10-08-2009 09:55 PM

Gonna be alright!

I have not failed! My wife is right here with me and thank God she does not Drink. Have not slept all week and lost 10 lbs, can't eat, can't think and so on. I wanted to go cold turkey so bad,but at day 5) I'm a nervous wreck. I feel really seizure prone and I'm going to my Doctor Tomorrow. It's for my own good and to play it safe. I will beat it no doubt, but not alone! It's the DT's kicking butt, not the effort. I just don't want to take a med to hide one thing and be hooked on another.

I will stay in touch.

Bless Yall,

Ron

Sorry Ron - I must have misunderstood - I thought you had 5 days sobriety.
If you're having withdrawal problems or anxieties - the Dr is the absolute #1 port of call...

Sorry for any confusion.

Ron,

DTs have a 35% mortality rate. Get your ass to the ER immediately.

Note: DTs does not stand for detox as some people think, it stands for delirium tremens. Please read this link and if it describes you get your ass to the ER:

Delirium tremens - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

rondfw777 10-08-2009 10:30 PM

I have not had a beer in 5 days, Thats when I went cold Turkey. I'm just not feeling any better and have had enough of anxiety and Brain Twitching! Grrrrrrrrrr

thirtybubba 10-08-2009 10:39 PM

Yeah, you might wanna consider the ER...

Haven't had DTs, but withdrawals don't usually go smoothly for me, either--lots of physical symptoms, followed by emotional ones after a few days.

Seizures, I've had a couple times. They can kill... dang near did it to me once. Paramedics happened to be nearby is what saved me. There's medication to reduce the risk of that, and it's not really a replacement--they don't get you addicted the same way. No real high. And they're a lot easier to come off of, a week or two later. I'm not one for medication in general--don't even have asprin in the house--but this is something I can get behind.

Unfortunately, I've done this far too many times, to know this much about it, but it can be done. And it's a lot easier once that physical stuff goes away.

Stay strong, Ron. And don't be afraid of the ER if it gets worse...although brain twitching may be worse, I'm no doctor but... :ring
We're here, whatever your mood...

Thanks for clarifying that Ron :)

As you know we can't give medical advice here but 5 days is generally post withdrawal.
this is a useful link on post acute withdrawal syndrome

Post Acute Withdrawl - Relapse Prevention Specialists - TLC The Living Center

Pls do see your Dr as you planned, or earlier @ the ER if you're especially concerned.

Hey Ron,

As you can see, you're not alone. You've received some excellent advice and can keep in touch right here for support and encouragement. Your wife sounds like an angel. Just do the best you can and when the opportunity is available, talk with a doc, maybe tomorrow. DTs are nasty and can kick the butt of anyone who has become totally dependent upon alcohol. My last bout of dts almost sent me over the edge, but that was 38 days ago, so you can do this, I know you can, with a little help from your new friends here and a good doc. Hang in there.

Surlyredhead 10-09-2009 05:24 AM

The beauty part of the program is that you don't have to do it alone! We are all here for you...

I'm only on day 15 this time around, but when my drinking was really bad 2 1/2 years ago I couldn't stop without medical help. It helped me get through the worst and it was controlled. I had the shakes, the tremors, the hallucinations, etc. and I was given medication to help with all that. Luckily I did not seizure, but I saw it happen. I was only given the meds for a few days and there was no side effect or wanting to take more. If you feel you can't do it, rather than have that beer, please let your wife take you to get help.
I'm thinking of you both. Take care.
