What's wrong with these DR.'s???
I just joined here, need a place to talk with other addicts. Real quick about me, started playing around w/ percos and loricets probably 4 years ago. Never for pain, just for a little juice. Liked how it felt. Only ate pills occasionally. Obviously it escalated, duh! why I'm here! Remember the first time I tried a little chip of a roxy, whew! Remember how much more potent an oxy 80 felt, never been more f-ed up! Got to be about a year and a half ago I started using percs every day, eventually found roxy's and oxy's. Loved to snort em, made everything ok. Meanwhile married, professional, with a baby on the way, and wife...clueless!!! Got to the point I'd snort as many as I had, could not take it easy. Know some who still medicate for years who still only do small doses but not me, got to the point snorting 10-15 pill a day. Whenever I couldn't find any, my "good" buddies would give me a handful of methadone and once I discovered how it took away the oxy w/d's I used it for about 6 mos. Eventually, I had had enough and desperately tried to quit. Made it 5 days once. I work a lot out of state so when I would go away I would try and detox away from family while working hard sweating balls **** 10 hours a day! Never could successfully do it alone. So..............................
Heres the best part..... I FINALLY stop lying to myself and spill the beans to my wife while I'm away because the I could not take it anymore. She had a lot of hate towards me, probably because I told her everything. She used to work at a methadone clinic for god's sake, I was so ashamed. The money I spent, the lying about where I was, I HATED myself. Finally went to a clinic to get better...
Spent 2 mos. on Suboxone and really tapered well to where I was taking a quarter 2x a day for 2 weeks. I tell my doctor, listen, I won't ever go back to opiods, it's not an option for me, my love of my life will leave me. Everything I've ever wanted, I got and I've been pissing it away and taking what I have for granted! So..................
To get off the suboxone, because you will withdrawal, he prescribes me tramadol and gives me this sheet a paper called "the tramadol protocol". Her's how it's intended to work....4 50mg. pills 4x a day for 3 days, 3 pills 3 more days, 2 pills 3 more days, 1 pill 3 more days, then, you're all good, Excuse my language but bull F-in sh8t! Day 3 I called my dr. and said my w/d's were strong and could not sleep...obviously been taking clonapin at night to get to sleep but wake up at 3 on the dot and toss and turn until I eat another tramadol. He tells me they think they undermedicate and it would be ok if I was hurtin to eat up to 400mg.'s a day..so for a few days I did, then started to taper, getting to 1 pill 8 am, 1 pill 8 pm. tried this for about 3 days and began serious w/d's! Called Dr. and he says this is RARE!...so he gives me a script for a 100 and says to stay on a little longer, should be ok. Now I start to research tramadol and all I read is horrible! I just want to be DONE.........PLEASE any help, I've tried everything!

I agree with you.
-rolling my eyes @ the doctors-
It's completely silly to prescribe one drug to try to help you get off another drug! How absurd!
Honestly, if you want deal with your addiction to drugs, I would strongly recommend going to a NA meeting, sharing about this experience, and finding a sponsor.
12-Step recovery programs can change your life if you are willing to work them.
They have for me.

Hi and Welcome,
You could try going to another dr, or to an addiction specialist. Many drs do not have much education on addiction.
I think others will be along who can give you more info.

Livinglife.... Tramadol has been used the way your doctor is prescibing it. I wouldn't conclude that he is incompetent or uncaring based on that alone. If you are not comfortable with him, find another doctor.
Hopefully some other folks will be along that have a little more experience here...
Welcome to SR!!

Well it's 7 a.m. and I managed to get almost 5 hours sleep last night, yeah! But as I sit and type I'm starting to feel my w/d's coming on. I've decided to start a journal and take notes of how much and when I take the tramadol. I'm hoping I can get thru today w/ 3 a day for a week, see how that goes. I've already cut down to 2 pills a day last week for about 3 days but was so unbearable so that's why I guess dr. said I needed to stay on a little longer and not taper so fast. I went from 4 pills a day to the 2 in 12 days. Thought I was getting there, this is so frustrating. My wife is helping me big time. She wants me to wean myself for a couple more weeks until I can take a 3 day weekend, which is coming up in a few weeks, then cold turkey. Have a feeling I' might need to be locked up in a straight jacket for that but.... I am determined. I've fought this hard and this long, **** I cold turkeyed oxy's once and felt great...then relapsed...wasn't really ready to quit. So thanks for listening, pray for me! I'll do the same, hope you all get thru the day!
***meant felt great after w/d's were gone, don't let me fool you, the cold turkey was a living nightmare. That is why I'm scared...I know what's coming and it won't be pretty!

LivingLifeMYWAY welcome to SR, imho you have gotten some sage advice on both changing docs and going to NA or some other support group. I have not walked in your shoes, I am an alcoholic and from talking with addicts who use AA as part of thier recovery the mental twist that takes an alcoholic back to drinking is very similar to the mental twist that takes an addict back to using.
An alcoholic understands an alcoholic better then any one else does, from what I understand the same holds true for addicts. For that reason AA & NA help a lot in recovery.
Ask the addicts here if they will ever not be an addict? They may not be addicted any more, but they are still an addict.
I am an alcoholic and always will be an alcoholic and I have not touched a drop in over 3 years, yet I know that I will never be able to drink safely, today it is not a big deal at all, but it is something that I need to be ever vigilante about. I have found a solution to life via the 12 steps of AA that has resulted in me not even considering a drink to possibly improve a single thing in life. NA offers the same deal in regards to drugs.

I would have to echo the advice here to either seek another doc or try to find an addictions specialist. Is there an outpatient addictions treatment clinic you can visit? An addictions doc would be up to speed with the best way to withdraw, and might be better informed about how to start your life in recovery. Do you have a long term plan for recovery?

Well, withdrawal is never painless.
It is traumatic for the body and mind, but you probably know that already. Are you angry at the docs because they told you it would be painless and easy?
It's not. But you know that, right? Or, are you angry because you didn't like them telling you it would be painless and easy?
If you are upset because they told you it would be painless and easy and it wasn't, then, I'm going out on a limb here, but, that is a petty issue.
I'm not the best person to give you advice because I'm an alcoholic and the language of pills and dosages is foreign to me. But I have been on the gurney in the ER floating in lala-alcohol-withdrawal land with with my heart pumping to the moon more times than I care to remember. So I know about withdrawal. My fault is that I just did it without talking to my docs.
If the outpatient withdrawal is not working for you, can you arrange inpatient?
Try to take a deep breath, slow down and take it easy. Try to define for yourself exactly what you need. If you don't know what you want from our outpatient rehab center, they can't help you....

When I was in rehab they would not let us have any caffeine or sugar. At first I thought it was down right mean and humiliating.
However, I got a chance to see how some of the residents who got out to go to church would load up on sweets & coffee and then be restless, irritable and discontent afterward.
Maybe you should ask your Doctor if diet has something to do with your problem?
