I am happy to join in on the topics of recovery. I would love to hear from some recovering addicts who I can identify with when it comes to getting complacent even with 6yrs clean from alcohol.

Yeah, I can relate, I got complacent after over 14 years, if you want to call it complacency. These days, I usually hit a minimum of 2 meetings per week, and work the steps to the best of my ability.

I have a difficulty reconciling the words addict and alcoholic. I am an alcoholic, I was an addict, when I attend meetings, I refer to myself as an alcoholic.

Keep coming back, you'll find a lot of support here.

to stop the complacency i do keep to a set routine every day.

get up, write a gratitude list, read the big book, pray, ring two newcomers, read the just for today card.

all this keeps me connected every day, and to be honest it only takes 20mins, (20mins to save my life) not a bad deal i think.

Yes Falltime, I became complacent after 15 years and picked up. I have to admit though I was not working a program, I didn't even have a program, I was just sober period. I started thinking I was not an alcoholic since I had not had a drink in that many years, and then started with prescription pills which of course led me back to alcohol. That ended with me trying to take my own life a year ago. Today I am back and just celebrated 1 year with the help of AA, working my program, working the steps with my sponsor and living the steps. I am eternally grateful for being given this precious gift for a second time.

I'll hit my 6yr anniversary on November 5th! Even with this much time under my belt(which I see as a miracle) I am very protective of my sobriety. If I'm not feeling very strong, I avoid going anywhere there is alcohol. I still practice the "bounce technique", it seems as if I go anywhere, gas station, grocery store and even adds on tv, I bounce my eyes away from it so I don't become focused on it. I've been doing this so long that it's become a habit...I do it without even thinking about it. I never take my sobriety for granted. Welcome to SR!

thankyou so much for that post and everyones comments that has helped me alot,,,

when i get sober i can last a few months at a time and then as you say i get compacent and think jez just red with dinner will be fine... and so the story begins...

so its really encouraging to read that we need to be on it all the time and as Tigers said "we have to be protective of our sobriety all the time" which is what i never have been....


but congrats to you for remaining sober, well done!!!!!

Welcome to SR and thank you for this thread....I have a year sobriety....I want to make sure I never get complacent in my recovery...gotta say, I like the 'bounce' technique...will incorporate that one!
