How has alcohol affected your Health?

I was a mod-heavy drinker for over 20 years. 36 yr old mother.

Physically started with gallbladder attacks due to stones.

Fatty liver and pancreas.

One hospital stay with pancreatitis.

Enlarged spleen.

Acid Reflux

Anxiety/Panic attacks

Significant weight gain

Increased bruising.

So how has alcohol affected your health and how has it improved since you quit drinking?

Thank you God for another hangover free morning :)

l have a feeling ( l might be imagining it) that l don't think as fast as l used to be able to.

ahh yes I forgot about that one hahaha..my MEMORY and thinking process has definetely been affected.

HawkeyePierce 09-22-2009 09:41 AM

My memory is shot. I don't remember a lot of things. I have to be reminded of things that have been told to me and it is really frustrating. I also have acid reflux, don't know if that is related but a very good chance.

i've been sober for 14 days now. mod-heavy drinker for 20 years.
i've noticed the following physical changes:
weight loss
less bruises/bruising - i used to bump into things/injure myself a lot more when drunk - obviously.
my eyes are 'clearer' 'shinier' - waaaay less puff in them and in my face in general.
i'd say probably my skin is better/younger looking BUT unfortunately at this time i'm smoking more cigarettes as a coping mechanism (not the best one i realize!)

I've got bruises on my knees that will never go away. For some reason I felt like it was a good idea to run while stumbling drunk a few times.

Sara420 09-22-2009 10:34 AM

wow carrie... this is what i can look forward to..
a lot of you have been drinking longer than ive been alive
i get anxiety attacks, but i dont think thats cause of my drinking, im just screwed up in general... and sometimes i spend days throwing up and not being able to eat anything (not ana/mia, im just sick).. i was throwing up blood last weekend... and sometimes people tell me i look sick when im not, or at least i dont think i am

baldjim 09-22-2009 10:40 AM

i have to say my mind is much better ,memory, thinking clearer evrything really :c029:http://www.soberrecovery.com/forums/...ilies/c029.gif

the thing is i never realised it untill i stopped drinking :e124:

a bit like saying i never knew the bulb was broken till it got dark i know ha ha but there you go

i also had liver problems, yellow eyes ,major depression ,miserable ,arguementitive ,bloated in the face,my get up and go had got up and gone ,i have just been reminded of those by the other half

note to self never ask what an ahole i was on drink unless i really want to be reminded by people who used to have to suffer from my drinking too :e124:

fatigue
anxiety
snoring!
digestive issues of both the input and output sides
more depression
Blood pressure!
long term case of the stupids
just feeling yucky

Most, if not all are gonzo. Sobriety is the best pill for those ills.

Jade19 09-22-2009 11:43 AM

Mine started with my gallbladder as well, then went:
swollen liver
Acid Reflux
Diverticulosis
MAJOR digestive problems
HIGH blood pressure (once I stopped drinking it went back to normal)
Elevated Triglycerides...who knew beer could do that!
Anxiety/Panic attacks...diminishing now...
Slight yellowing of eyes

Since I have stopped my complexion is better, weight is down, no longer on high blood pressure meds, anxiety/panic has decreased, eyes are whiter, still hoping my digestive/acid problems resolve themselves....but overall simply amazing!

Diarreah. For years. Gone!

Amazing the things a drunk will put up with.

Tazman53 09-23-2009 02:34 AM

Tender liver
swollen liver
fatty liver
overweight
red eyes
puffy face
skin all messed up
bled easily
Diarreah

A real picture of health I was!!!!

All of the above is gone, my memory is still improving.

catch-22 09-23-2009 05:48 AM

panic attacks
depression
weight gain
snoring
acid reflux
loss of memory
elevated liver enzymes

I hear that. Took a good few months for things to start to get back on track.

Heart palpitations. Acid reflux.

I take pills for the palpitations and the reflux went away shortly after I stopped drinking. I rarely have a problem with either one now.

Carrie36 09-23-2009 08:13 AM

Oh yeah..my heart palpatations are gone and I havent felt the need to take an ativan all week!

Latte 09-23-2009 08:22 AM

Just a big case of the crazies. Sobriety is the only way that got better.

Hey Sara you may already have anxiety due to you think you are screwed up in general, however anxiety and alcohol usually go hand in hand, not a good feeling...
