Hi pleased to meet you :)
Hi I'm Kirsty, im new here. I've been going to AA for 5 months, but have had quite a few relapses and have now been sober for 3 weeks tomorrow.
I think I was definitely born with this illness, my parents are both alcoholics thus leading me to be co-dependant from a very early age. I was always the one who was there for everyone else because i wanted to be'good' and needed to be needed. Because I didn't like myself very much. This led to me taking on everyone else's problems and neglecting myself, the result being that 6 months ago I had a nervous breakdown and went from binge drinking at the weekends to drinking every morning for 2 weeks. Thanfully I had a good friend in recovery who took me to AA.
I joined here a couple of days ago and im really pleased to have found this forum and just reading the info and posts has helped me so much!
It's my best friend's wedding tomorrow and im chief bridesmaid and I am so full of fear and anxiety, I keep saying the serenity prayer and trying to hand it over to God..

Welcome to our recovery community...
Lots of us have had several tries at sobriety
before we actually found solid recovery.
Well done on your sober time...

Welcome to SR Kirsty, congrats on the 3 weeks sober. Do you have a sponsor yet? A network? Do you use either?
Kirsty I am not being mean with those questions, in order for me to stay sober I needed far more then just meetings, I needed a sponsor, a network and to use both, I also took the steps with my sponsor and today I pass on to others what was freely passed on to me.

Cool, in regards to the wedding, several things:
1. Keep your cell phone with you.
2. Call your sponsor just before you go.
3. Hang out with the folks not drinking..... I know in early recovery I thought every one drank but me and other alcoholics in AA, I quickly discovered how many people do not drink, a whole lot more then I ever dreamed.

Well said Tazman.
I'm early in recovery and just attended a funeral. I was shocked at how many people didn't drink, or really just had a few, then stopped.
I would have never noticed this before (had I been drinking). I honestly thought everyone drank like me.
Also, it was a shock that no one really even noticed I wasn't drinking. Again, I though everyone obsessed about alcohal the way I did.
Great learning experience.

Welcome Kirsty In early sobriety I went to a wedding also, I did what Taz said above, took my cell phone and called my sponsor. I also let people in the rooms know I was going and asked if I could text them from the wedding, many even took my number. To my surprise I received many texts during the wedding from people in the rooms, it was awesome that others were thinking of me and I also used the phone alot that night. I also set the alarm on my phone for a reminder to say the Serenity Prayer for 2 hrs into the wedding and when it went off I remembered. Stay connected.
