Thumbs up TOPIC: What's This 'FREEDOM' We Hear About?

Hi Im Sharon and Im an Alcoholic.

By the grace of my HP and
people like you here in SR
I havent found it necessary
to pick up a drink of alcohol
since 8-11-90.

For that and you I am truely
grateful.

FREEDOM.....

What is this 'FREEDOM' we
hear so often in recovery
mean?

FREEDOM from what? FREEDOM
from whom? FREEDOM...what
is it??????

How do you explain the FREEDOM
you know? You feel inside? The
FREEDOM you want? The FREEDOM
you see others have and exper-
ience?

As a newcomer 19 yrs ago, I
had no idea what others were
talking about. All I know is it
was something I wanted.

I would listen intentively as
to what they did on a daily
bases in their life following
in the footsteps of others in
recovery.

Many talked about this WILLING-
NESS, This OPENMINDEDNESS,
and lastly this HONESTY that
they had to have in order to
recieve this FREEDOM from
alcohol or drugs.

It was called the KEY that un-
locked them from obsession to
drink or use. It allowed them
to stop the merry-go-round
so they could get off.

Once the spinning stopped
then they were able to focus on
what was necessary to stay
sober or clean and follow the
steps in and open and honest
way to achieve that FREEDOM
many talked about.

Would you like to explain that
FREEDOM you'd like to have, or
what u've experienced so for in
ur life?

Freedom - what is it? I can still see myself 5 yrs ago scared and insecure in my body and mind - ALWAYS thinking others were judging my outsides and insides. I can still hear the lies I told for no reason, the blaming I did because I was too scared to look inside at my shortcomings. I can still remember the pills I used to sleep or be awake or to simply take away an uncomfortable feeling. I can see myself like it was yesterday.

Today, freedom means so many things to me but the biggest is turning things over to my HP and allowing that surrender to open me up to new possibilities. It means that I can walk into a room - ANY ROOM - and just be myself and that is more than enough. It means that I can tell the truth - ANY TRUTH - without adding anything to any story and that is enough. It means that depression, lonliness and boredom can be lifted with some work and faith. It means that I can surrender to who I am, just as I did with my addiction, and give myself some time to explore what I find. It means I can choose to be alive and have that be the miracle for the day. It means that I don't have to react to everything and anything around me. It means that I can choose a consequence by my actions. Freedom is the key and the key unlocks many doors in my life.

Thank you for bringing this up - it feels good to remember these gifts we are given daily.

Freedom in this context for me means:

Freedom from crashing into doors, windows, any furniture that is 'In the way';
Freedom from getting arrested for causing a disturbance, etc.;
Freedom from my partner throwing things at my head;
Freedom from wasting a huge amount of money;
Freedom from destroying my liver, pancreas, brain, etc etc.;
...Freedom from an early grave.

I like freedom.
