How to find a sponsor
Hi everyone,
I've enjoyed reading all of the posts and getting to know many of you - you're all so brave and supportive! I was wondering how I would go about finding a local sponsor! I live in Poughkeepsie, NY and would really like to meet with a sponsor (soon) as I want to jump in feet first and receive all the support I can to remain sober! I'd love to hear suggestions....can I find a sponsor through this website perhaps?
Thanks again for all of your support
Natalee

Like I said in the other thread...if you mean AA I think the best way is to just show up at a local meeting
If you mean like a mentor/personal trainer thing - I dunno.
Maybe someone here can help...I just use this site for that
In the meantime, keep hanging out here anyway, Natalee

Welcome to SR....
You find a local AA meeting and go.
Try to get there 10 or so minutes early.
Look on the free literature rack for the AA guideline
"Questions & Answers on Sponsorship" ... take it home to read.
You might want to sit next to the women ...say " Hi I'm new"
I'm really pleased you are interested in moving forward
All my best.....

Im one of those people that hates
to bother others. It was always
difficult to ask for help.
There was a lady who came to
the treatment center to take
patients to outside meetings.
This lady took me to several of
those outside meetings when i
was in rehab for 28 days, 19 yrs
ago.
I eventually ask her to be my
sponsor. To this day I still never
replaced her.
Ive stayed sober a many one
days at a time by following
her and others in their footsteps.
By listening and absorbing all
that they share on their
experiences, strengths and hopes
of what it was like before during
and after alcohol.
Over the yrs, I have used you guys
here in SR as my sponsors. Ive
also continued to use the fellowship
of AA as a whole and a faith
in a HP for guidance and strength to
stay sober.
I dont sponsor anyone person, however
when i share my own ESH here and
in face to face meetings, i feel like
i sponsor all those who wish to hear.
I followed by example and thus lead
by example.
I can't keep what was so freely
passed on to me over the past
19 yrs. if i dont give it away.
And that's how it works for me.

hi natalee...
A sponsor is a member of AA that will show you precisely how they recovered from alcoholism..using a suggested program of action outlined in the book alcoholics anonymous..the 12 steps.
are you attending AA meetings..(the fellowship)?
if you are.. I'm sure you will find someone there....even if its a temporary one..
if i can be of any help with further questions please feel free to pm me.
i would strongly suggest you dont use internet sponsors....unless you've met them face to face as well
and stick to same sex sponsors....
Shaun.

Finding a sponsor
Hi everyone - thanks so much for the great feedback! I have never been to an AA meeting but may drop by a local one tomorrow to meet a few people and see if I can request a sponsor. I think that having someone to meet with, face to face will be an extra valued support system for me - can't wait :ghug3
This link may help: Your First AA Meeting
IMO a on-line sponsor can help you with steps 1 through 4 and maybe 10 & 11.
However, 5 requires a f2f with some flesh & blood person (clergyman, doctor or therapist) and step 9 is going to require some kind of "Rehearsal".
12th step calls definitely requires a partner.

Simple. If you can't get there early, raise your hand and ask for help from a temporary sponsor.
1. Make sure they have a good solid program
2. Do they have a sponsor (gurus need not apply)
3. Can you relate to each other at all?

the internet is full of people who are not who they say they are.
especially careful for a female..imo.
there are people that seek out the vunerable people.......the world over.
if youve met the person or someone else can vouch for that person...then sure i guess there is advantages for someone remote or unable to reach a face 2 face sonsor.
be real careful..im a trucker that lives in the uk.....do you know that for sure?
shaun.
