Stupid_Responses_from_People_when_you_mention_that _you_no_longer_drink
To All,
This is a list of some of the more stupid responses I've heard from people in these 2 months of sobriety since I let them know that I no longer drink -
"You're giving up drinking? What's wrong with you, do you not want to have fun?"
- My dad
"What, is it because you're stuck for money? I'll lend you some if you like..."
- My half-brother
"You don't drink, you don't do drugs, you don't eat meat... that must be so boring..." - work colleague
"Why don't you have a drink? I'll buy you one if you like...." - acquaintance
"You used to... - are you just doing this to impress some woman?" - My dad (again)
Let's just say that support for my teetotalism has been less than emphatic...
Feel free to add more dumb responses people have given you....

Another one I've had (which is not stupid really as many people do this) is if I was only "detoxing" (of the sort that people do after New Year to lose a bit of weight etc..) and would be back on the booze in a few weeks...
"it wasn't really that bad now that I think about it, lets just forget about it." ~the woman who walked out and found me fooling around with her husband in the hot tub my last night drunk, she wants me to keep partying with her. . .
I hope its ok that I laughed out loud on that one Dee ;-)
Some people seem to be disappointed because the drunk NB isn't coming out.... I don't get it. I guess I was entertaining for a while but most of them didn't get to see the other side of my drinking (black outs, passing out, etc. etc. etc.)
Some stupid ones I can remember:
Why not quit tomorrow?
Just have a few & stop?
I don't think you have a problem
You don't drink that much more than me
Too much "stupid" to list
Good thread, thanks
NB

I agree that there is jealousy in this. I think that some people are secretly embarrassed or even worried about their drinking habits (even if they would never be considered alcoholics), and the idea of someone they know successfully getting over his daemons causes a bit of envy and chagrin.
Like the old Morrissey song, "We hate it when our friends become successful...."

A Drunk Obnoxious Stranger asked me at a Party one time "What's the matter? Why aren't you Drinking?", to which I replied "You can find the answer to that by calling 1-800- NONE OF YOUR BUSINESS".
When offered a drink, like yesterday when out to eat, I just looked them in the eye and briefly said, " I don't drink anymore, I was abusing it. " That stopped these 2 women and they changed the subject. Loving it. , I think they got it.

"What? You're not an alcoholic! I drink WAY more than you!" (My sister - I'm saving her a seat)
"What? You joined AA? Why didn't you just join a book club or something if you were lonely?" (my Dad - saving another seat for him)
"Are you still going to those things? (meetings)" (Dad, 7 years into my recovery)
"Listen to me. We talked it over and wanted to call you; your father and I have decided that you're not an alcoholic." (Mom - may as well save her a seat too)
