what am I supposed to be doing??

I don’t know if this makes sense or not…hopefully you guys will let me know!!!

So, I have been going to meetings, feeling much better about things! But I feel a little lost. Like I don’t know what I am supposed to be doing with staying sober and clean.
Everyone says that I need to ‘work the program’. But nobody is explaining what that means or how to do that. I feel a little phoney when I go to meetings cause I feel like I am there almost cause I figure I should be there but not cause I want to be there. I do want to be there, and I am getting stuff out of the meetings.
But still so confused about it all. I don’t have any copies of any of the books at home to read. I want to make sure I am doing the right things and that I am not going to mess it up this time. But I am not sure cause I don’t really feel like I am doing anything.
Maybe you guys can shed some light now this for me!

Thanks!

I would suggest getting a copy of the big book and start reading (its also available online) Have you gotten any numbers from others at the meeting? Thats a good start to finding a sponsor

You indentified several things that you know that you need to do. That's a great beginning!
Get copies of the fellowship literature to read and study. Just ask the chairperson at any meeting that you would like to have a book. Deciding to be an active member at a Home Group is a way of putting your recovery into action by being of service. Picking a home group is as easy as deciding to be part of a group that you are most comfortable at and that carries a strong message of recovery. Getting a sponsor is a good way to develope a supportive relationship that will help you to work the Twelve Steps and Twelve Traditions. Picking a sponsor is as as easy as asking another individual that you feel a kinship with and is living by spiritual principles to be your sponsor. Introducing yourself at meetings and asking for phone numbers is a good way to begin forming a network of people who can help you stay clean and begin to recover.

Take it easy on yourself and make daily progress as best you can.
Stay clean and keep the desire to live a better way of life alive.

Hi

I've just started going to meetings, and went into a 12 step rehab for a few weeks, 2 months ago. Before i went to rehab, where they went through the 12 steps and explained the program (the principles and the practical side of working the steps), i didn't get it at all. But the advice i was given, and would have saved me 5k, is to get to meetings early, go for the coffees after (if they don't do this go to another meeting that does!), find the people who are willing to be sponsors and pick a couple you like the look of and get their numbers...and ring them, get a big book and other AA literature (like the 12 and 12) and keep going to meetings.

Hope that helps:-)

"I do want to be there, and I am getting stuff out of the meetings."

Keep going, don't stop, it takes time.

The "immediate gratification" of recovery doesn't exist like it did with using.

'The program' is the 12 steps. In the BB chapter, How It Works, it says "Rarely have we seen a person fail who has thoroughly followed our path." The path is the 12 steps. Taking the 12 steps honestly and thoroughly will lead to a spiritual awakening that will solve your alcohol problem. It will do a lot more than that for you, but that's a pretty good start.

Most people find it necessary and highly beneficial to take those 12 steps with a sponsor who has had a spiritual awakening themselves by taking the 12steps. So, find a same-gendered person to take you through those steps. Look for someone that knows the program as it is outlined in the Big Book. You'll need a book, so may as well get one.

If nobody is explaining to you how this program works, they are failing you. Someone should be reaching out and offering to help you work the steps. If it's not happening, take the initiative to find that person. Just state that you want to start taking the steps and someone will be there to help you.
