This new arcade section... I like it, and I want my name in lights under my avatar as the champion of something.
I can't be the only one... 30 years ago... asteroids, space invaders, galaglia... others... Joystick in one hand... Beer (or shot) in the other. Jeez... how many hours in bars and how many quarters did I drop in those machines....
BTW... I was damn good... at both!!

the picture i had in my mind was i was a bar pool hustler.
unbeatable with a killer game.
the reality is after 9 i couldnt hit a barn door with a cricket bat.
and i only ever made the b team because id be smashed by 10 lastest.
i tried going back to snooker in recovery only to be beaten by most kids a quarter of my age.

Hate to say it, but video games were my first addiction at age 12. It was the day's of Pacman and Space Invaders, and it was a real addiction. I lied about it, stole money to "support my habbit", it was an escape. I did one of the most shameful things in my life to get money for games, I stole coins from my father's coin collection for money to play games.
Not saying there shouldn't be an arcade section here, and I still play games, still somewhat addictively, as an escape, but I guess it's at least a exercise in harm reduction.

I can relate...it started with pinball...then pong! oooohoho pong at home then the Atari 2600...oooohoho...and it stills goes on. However I didn't play well with others. Game counsels thrown against the wall...fist fights...baseball bat to the TV...yea. Liquor, drugs and home video games didn't mix too well then with me. Now I have mellowed my obsession by being clean. No more PlayStation 48 hr marathons and related madness. Yet I still play games...still lousy at them...but much more mellowed about them.
My first video game system was a Bally Astrocade (before the Atari 2600)
Bally Astrocade
I have had most of the gaming systems over the years. The xbox & xbox 360 have been my main consoles of choice. I used to get drunk & play Call of Duty 4 with clan mates (over 25 gamers site) and had quite a bit of fun (5.1 surround sound headset=awesome)
I haven't played much at all since quitting drinking though, I am not sure if it is because I am in a different state of mind or what but the desire has left me right now. 16 players online in an all out war can be a good distraction from life, I thought about going on tonight but ended up coming on here instead.
Here is the XBox 360 Call of Duty 4 trailer
Now I want to play hehe
Hope all is well with everyone.

The first console game I played was Pong, didn't really get into it too much. My first system was an Atari 2600, upgraded to Intellivision, Colecovision, Sega Genisis, Nintendo 64, X-box and my current X-box 360.
I actually find I am less likely to drink when playing because the controller takes two hands and a good deal of concentration and coordination, neither of which I have when drinking.
Perhaps trading one addiction for another, but I would at least call it an exercise in harm reduction. Thank goodness for Gamefly!!!!

On the same awesome topic: I would suggest watching Kong, a fistfull of quarters. It is a movie about a married male in his late thirties who while unemployed plays donkey kong and beats the high score of all time. The nerd establishment for D.K. topples and he ends up traveling cross country to go head to head against the old champ. Its a true story/mocumentary.
