They're just excuses Ben. If drinking is really that fundamental to doing ones job or career advancement, there's a lot of teetotalers falling behind and missing out - and that's just not true.

I'm only going on my own experiences in IT and conversations with some friends who work in the City of London and Canary Wharf, so I may be wrong. Certainly in public sector IT (my old employer) and finance, due to the need for entertainments that do not discriminate against race or religion, the pub culture is a lot less apparent.
