Detox question---anyone out there from the Bay Area?
Hey all~
I've spent a frustrating amount of time on the phone this week looking for medically supported detox. I even had my hopes up yesterday when a private program offered a payment plan. I was to go into rehab tomorrow at noon. Unfortunately, the guy I first spoke with didn't have his story straight and I am now barred from going unless I can come up with a $2000- down payment. I don't have a primary doc, insurance or cash, so I don't have many options. Does anyone have any suggestions for this area? Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

Try giving these folks a call:
Janus of Santa Cruz - Leaders in substance abuse treatment
They have a dang good detox and other programs that many have used and are doing well today.
They also used to have 'sliding fee' program.
Wouldn't hurt to call them.
Hope that helps.

Hi Soos! I wish I had some suggestions for you but I don't. FYI there is another thread out there today about detox and financial need that might be good to check out.
I really hope you find something soon. Keep us posted! (((Hugs)))

Yes, definitely check out the Salvation Army.
They offer free rehab programs to anyone who wants it.
"The Salvation Army Adult Rehabilitation Center (ARC) in San Francisco provides services to individuals suffering from the debilitating effects of substance abuse.
Our residential facilities (112 beds for men in the Mission and 24 beds for women at Pinehurst Lodge in the Sunset District) provide a social model environment in which individuals learn the tools to overcome their chemical dependency and lead productive, clean, and sober lives."

I am going to put these links. If they are not medical detoxes, they will probably have information as to where you can get medically detoxed:
From SF Public Health for Substance Abuse 1-800-750-2727 - this is the treatment access program phone line, they offer free placement
or if you are in SF and haven't called 311 yet you could try them
Check these links
Walden House, San Francisco - Drug and Alcohol Treatment
Delancey Street Foundation - Home
Welcome to the Mission Council on Alcohol Abuse for the Spanish Speaking, Inc.
Women's Recovery Association
Iris Center HOME
Department of Public Health, Community Substance Abuse Services

and if all else fails go here
Substance Abuse Treatment Facility Locator
and start calling places and asking
And you might call SF General or just go to their ER....
Honestly, there is no reason to pay in the Bay Area. What I have realized about resources in Substance Abuse treatment is it an issue of figuring out how to find the right places. Unless you have a case manager or already a relationship with social workers or probation officers I don't think it is that easy to find the free rehabs but the reality is that most of them are free or low cost that I know of in the city. In terms of medical detox, I don't exactly know, but the free rehabs will know the deal. I put on the list two that specifically deal with women and then a PDF that lists agencies that deals with women.

Just to make sure you look through this PDF too

(actually this one is a bit long and sort of confusing, Laurie's link is better)

Thanks to all who have written here. Sfgirl and Laurie-I appreciate your support and your effort. I am technically living in the East Bay at the moment; looks like the city has much more to offer. Some programs require proof of residency but I'm still hopeful.
Best,
Soos

Yes, I am still looking. I've called every resource number I've been given so far, but things are a little bleak out there. Almost all clinics have discontinued medical detox due to lack of funding. SF general turned me out and told me to go to a local clinic the next day. Since I'm not technically an SF resident, the clinic more or less shut me out of the program. I've been told to go to Highland...I'm a little nervous given the stories I've heard, but I don't know where else to turn. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!
Soosie - This happened many years ago, however I went to Highland Hospital in Oakland for detox. I was frightened like you seem to be now. I want to tell you that beyond waiting what seemed like forever, I got great compassionate care there. I hope you go for it. There was also a place in Hayward, CA called Cronin House. It was a treatment facility for 30 plus days with a referral to Horizon Services for continued sober living. Please consider these resources.
Thanks for the feedback mtn. You're right that I am frightened. Perhaps because I'll be on public trans for an hour just to get there and I'm a bit of an agoraphobe when I'm drinking. I'm terrified that they will turn me away, like they did at SF Gen. and I'll be out there detoxing in the world. Most of my friends have moved away and I don't have any family left, so I'm feeling a little scared and lost at the moment. I know I can't keep this up; it's (literally) killing me. I appreciate the resources. Now I need to rally the courage.
