Thumbs up TOPIC: Surgery Experiences. Had Any Recently? Hip Surgery Was Mine.

Hi Im Sharon and Im an Alcoholic.

By the grace of my HP and people
like you here in SR I havent found
it necessary to pick up a drink of
alcohol since 8-11-90.

For that and you I am truely grateful.

Have you had any surgery experiences
lately/recently?

What caused you to have this surgery?

Mine was hip surgery. I went thru it
this past Wednesdy and all I can
say islol

It lasted an hour and it was over.

My first night i layed in the hopital
bed unable to move. However.....
I wanted to scream for them to just
peel me off that incline i was on.

I survived that first night, then was
allowed to get up and move to this big
blue chair they kept raving about the
next day.

The blue chair....:rotfxko....was a joke.

Ok, so they had to cut thru to my left
hip to replace it with a new ball joint that
was damaged 18 yrs ago during one of
drinking sprees.

Hitting a concrete culvert sittting on
top the ground was nothing to sneeze
at. That little stunt brought me back
to the hopital 18 yrs later for a new hip.

Im at home now being monitored by
my home health service who will pop
in several days a week for 6 weeks.

They kept asking me about my pain
tolerance level all thru out the day....

3 when i was on pain meds, but as soon
as it gre nearer to the 4 hour segments
to take my meds....the pain was up to
8ish.

The experience overall for my surgery
was very good as evryone involved
with my recovery were very helpful.

An im in good hands now as my
husband will be off work all week
to play nurse for me. hehe

Share ur surgery experiences with
us if u have any.

Hey Sharon, glad you're back safe and sound!
From my own experience I know surgery is not a pleasant experience. I remember, about 1996 I guess, having my first shoulder surgery in BR. Michelle and I were living in Natchez taking care of my parents. Throughout most of my life I have had shoulder trouble and continue to deal with it. Anyway, the Doc was supposed to be so good, since he worked on "all" the LSU football players, that I was expecting (there I was expecting things again! lol) a arthroscopic procedure. Well imagine my surprise when I woke up and found a huge bandage on my shoulder! Turns out the Doc decided to open my shoulder up and "work" on it. That evening, after I came out from under, my shoulder hurt terribly. I wore the nurse call button out! The nurse would come and give me shot of Demerol for pain. Now know this, I was a connoisseur of pain meds! lol. I could not figure out why I would get the shot and still hurt like h..l. This went on for about eight hours, beyond that time I was at a point where I had to get some relief, so I walked down to the nurse's station and asked for something else for the pain. I was given two lortabs and was okay, slept easy.
What I have just put together in last three years, much to my surprise, was that someone handling the pain meds was taking the demerol and giving me saline, no wonder I hurt!! I discovered this from other nurses in the program.
Addiction knows no bounds and permeates every area of life.
The thing I found really ironic was the Doc didn't even come close to taking care of the problem. A couple of years later I had both shoulders redone correcting the problems the other Doc completely missed!
Oh Well.......... I am glad your experience has been positive. You have my prayers for a speedy recovery....

Thanks Walter....Much appreciated.

Im remembering 18 yrs ago when laying
in the hospital bed all messed up from
hitting that culvert and smashing the
front end of my car way into my legs,
having my spleen removed along with
numerous broken ribs and contusions,
I was also in lots of pain.

Of course back then they came in to
the room give u the demerol shots
or whatver it was to numb the pain.

I pushed that little red button a few times
myself, however i tried to control the
pain just as much because i felt guilty
already for placing myself in a positions
like i did and being a burden to my family.

So one less shot was always there on
my mine so it wouldnt add more cost
to the bill.

Whats different today is,they have the
button to push for the pain med. to go
in directly as u need it. Even then i
didnt want to use it cause it was
making me neasuas.

Id buzz the nurse and she would
come in and tell me to use the button
because thats what was prescribed
to me by the doctor.

Eventually they took that device out
of my arm and gave me a pill to take
every 4 hurs for pain which is where
I am today.

Soon as i dont have anymore pain
to heal then im off all meds. WHEW..!

Sharon,

I'm glad you're back and beginning to heal from your surgery.

Hopefully you'll be up and around before too long.

Hi Sharon!

Wishing you a speedy recovery!!

My surgery was around a year ago at six months sober to put the bones in both arms back together after an accident. Lots of plates and screws! It was a little over 5 hours then 4-5 days in the hosp with synthetic morphine intravenously. Vicodin for quite a while after. I never experienced any euphoric sensation either from the IV meds nor the Vicodin. I only took the Vicodin to take the edge off the considerable pain that I had. I gained a new appreciation for my arms, hands and much greater respect for the physically handicapped.

Thanks Anna and Dime.....

We sure do put our bodies thru so
much stress and strains during our
lives. Then placing in harms way
while on drugs or alcohol is just
adding fuel to the fire.

We dont think about taken care
of our bodies as much as we should
while we were young. We always
felt like we had bionic bodies that
would miraculously repair it self each
time we damaged it.

Of course we always had parents to
to pay the cost of our mistakes. It
was just expected to think that way.

Then we marry and re have spouses
to rely on....

What about the ones who r alone?

Older folks?

Well...im headed towards the older generation
with rocking chairs on the porch...WHAT.....lol
I have motorcycles to ride.....roads to travel...

Today i will pay close attention to how I take
care of my body. Each part is a precious gift
and to not take lightly.

Nothing myself, but been doing my best to stay clean over the last few days and throwing extra strength into the next few to come.

My dad will be having a triple or quadruple bypass in the morning (Monday). I'm just really praying that everything's going to be okay.

Sharon, I wish you the very best in your healing. Huge, huge hugs from over here.

I am so glad to hear that you made out alive..LOL

Seriously tho. I am happy you are ok and home now doing well.
And when you are all healed up can move about and live life.

I just had hernia surgery a few weeks ago. It was the most painful experience in my life. I never want to feel pain like that ever again.

I was begging them to knock me back out it hurt so bad. LOL. They wouldnt do it.
The pain med drip and pump witht the button I had wasnt touchin the pain. Then the next day they were pushing me to get up and move and walk.
I told them they better leave me alone right now. LOL.
The nurses told my grams I was feisty. LOL
Ok..I am in serious pain. And yall want me to move. I cant even breathe without it hurting.
I have never had to have another person help me use the bathroom in my life. It was an experience. But considering the pain I wa sin. Wasnt at all embarrassed like I thought I would be. I just wanted back in the bed and not standing or moving.
I am still in a little pain from the stitches inside. But ll in all. My stomach doesnt look like I am about to pop twins at any moment and I can use the bathroom all by myself now. LOL

Heal fast and take advantage of the pampering.

Chiynita.... lol ...thanks for making
me laugh..... I feel 100% better
already.... Well im on my way....

We have no idea what kind of pain we
will experience after going thru major
surgery. Everyones tolerance level to
pain is different.

Those poor nurses that have to deal
with peoples ups and downs all day
can be nerving.

I had a good group of nurses whom
were all caring and positive upbeat.

They would come in and id call them
sweety even if they were as old enough
to be a parent...lol

And with smiles at each visit and
conversations about tattoos to what
kind of cologne or powder r u wearing....
made the stay there very pleasant.

I was probabaly the only young chick
there with a hip replacement umongst
the elderly getting their knees done.

If they saw a smile and heard a kind
word then it may have made their day.

Pain is pain and it hurts no and ifs and
butts about it. Even for me. I can
tolerate it as much as i can until help
is just an arms length away.

A speedy recovery to you too Chiynita.
Stay sweet and keep ur humor. lol

WOW congratulations on your sober time sharon :ghug3

I'm dreading the next time I have to go in for ANY surgery where I may have to be put on pain-killers. I hope the pain-meds will be an 'option' and not a requirement.

When u go for surgery talking to ur physician
before hand about ur medical history will benifit
u. All the meds i try to be on are non narcotic
or nonhabit forming.....all my doctors know i am in
recovery and that i didnt want anything to jeopardize
my recovery.

When i went into surgery, i was placed in good
hands with my physicians,,,,i trusted them to
take care of me before during and after major
surgery.

I was definitely in pain when i came to after
my hip replacement.....those hours afterwards
all the way thru the night was the hardest
pain i ever had to endure.....however with
the medicine best suited for me, it kept me
from be so miserable.

Now im home and yes im on some pain medicine
however with poper usage i should be done
with it very soon.
