Billy, so excited for you, but one step at a time eh, lol
what made me make that choice to stop 6 years ago was the realization that my doc had me by the shorthairs and I was powerless and that terrified me . It was destroying my life....

and btw, its never to soon to get a sponsor

I don't Twelve Step presently, but am so proud of you Bill for opening up your mind to new thoughts. We need all the help we can get. Step One turns out to be true, damn it, and oh how I didn't want that to be the case. One drink and I'm off - to who knows where? It could be a one nighter, or a months or years-long binge where I'm drinking round the clock, terrified for my life. I've proven this to myself numerous times, so yes, I am powerless once that first swallow enters my body.

You're an excellent student, Billy - you're doing great!

left out the most important part(thanks Hevyn)...I know if I used, in minutes I would be under that spell( for me it is drugs, not alcohol), and powerless once again.

Billy and ClosetExtrovert,

Yes, please find a meeting and get a big book and see what you think if AA. Here is a great link on your first AA meeting that I end up telling a lot of people to read:

I don't do the 12 steps and don't go to meetings. It's not for me.
