Thumbs up TOPIC: You Can Have Self-Respect If You Give A Lot, Expect Little & Keep It Simple.

Hi Im Sharon and Im an Alcoholic.

By the grace of my HP and people
like you here in SR I havent found
it necessary to pick up a drink of
alcohol since 8-11-90.

For that and you I am truely grateful.

I learned how to have self-respect
through work that AA gave me to do.

I learned how to be a friend.

I learned how to go out and help
other people....

There is nowhere else I could have
done that.

I have learned that the more I
give, the more I will have....

The more I learn to give, the more
I learn to live.

We can have self respect if we
give alot, expect little and keep
it simple.

Give me some examples of going out and helping people if you will. I am 5+ months since my last drink. I am always friendly, always have been. I have always given, sometimes more than I could afford. Through working on my codependency I am learning about healthier ways of giving. That being said, I hear a lot on this site about service. I know "no time" is an excuse people will use to put off everything in the book, but I am truly not sure how/when to squeeze volunteer work into my schedule.

What do people do out there besides AA stuff. I know through AA you can be of service to new comers, but I am not in that program, so what other types of service are people out there doing?

I live and work my program in my
everyday life. Just being here
and sharing ur experiences,
strengths and hopes with others
just like you did is service work.

Think of allthe things u do during
the day. Giving of urself in kind
ways is service work. Being curteous,
kind, polite, loing, caring is service
work.

U hold the door for someone coming
in after u at the store. Treat others
like u would want them to treat u.

Praying is service work. Feeding the
birds is service. A kind jesture. Do
something without being told to or
looking for a reward for it.

In doing things without being selfish
about it is service work.

In my heart and soul, i have faith
and believe my HP is with me and
guiding me all along the way. And
has been with me before during and
after recovery.

Im no holy roly but i try to the best
of my ability to be a good person.

I dont belong to any organization, no
clubs or things like that other than
my AA program. I share here on SR
and share my sober life with my husband
whom is also in AA.

We take each day at a time enjoying
life and having fun.

That's the way it work for me.
