Great idea Nogard I am terrible at doing things I know I need to!

I'm not as ambitious as you so I will give myself three goals for tomorrow.

Tidy my house (its a mess)

Get away from the computer and out of the house for a while.

And finally eat properly instead of stuffing my face.

Wish me luck.

Hi Kevin, nice thread!

I have always been a procrastinator and also have trouble making decisions. I am always fearful of what "might" happen and, despite knowing that the event rarely is as bad as my fears, usually put stuff off. Oddly enough, once I make a decision (which can take way too long), I have to do the "thing" RIGHT AWAY. I have no clue if this is "typical" of alcoholics. What I do know is that, if I postpone something, it sits in the back of my brain, causing me more anguish than if I just went ahead and did it!!! Yet I repeat the same type of procrastination again and again. Slow learner, I guess.

It seems to me that "discipline" is something talked about as necessary for recovery and I do find that exercising discipline makes me feel good about myself.

So, on that note, I have had a broken molar for at least a month and then broke another one just the other night. The day after the second one broke, I said...NO MORE PUTTING THIS OFF and made an appointment to get them fixed. Now I have to say I am away from home and my regular dentist (a perfect excuse to wait...) and I HATE going to the dentist...

But I went and got them fixed and *surprise, surprise*, it wasn't as bad as I had envisioned. AND I feel proud of myself!

Make Dentist appointment....eek!

I see you have meditate on your list too, I always have that on my list, I hardly ever do it. It is one thing I really want to get serious about.

Hi Kevin,

You have a great plan!

Lists are a great way of helping you to feel like you're accomplishing things. I'm going through the dental routine now too.

Sorry...I seemed to have pricked a few consciences with the dentist story...or was this something already on your lists? If so...that's just freaky...another one of those coincidences that isn't??? Hmmmmm

Just a rhetorical question here (non-topic and not meant as offensive to anyone who chose this profession), but I've always wondered why someone would WANT to be a dentist???!!! Your clients are never happy about being in "the chair" at least no one I know ever wakes up and says...oh goody, I get to go to the DENTIST today!

I need a list of things I need to not be doing. I'm too busy! I understand the point of the thread though so I am sending you out support Kev.

Actually I have to make a dental appointment too so there. That's on the list. But I won't be able to do it until next week .

I think maybe dentist's appts are always lurking in the background

Tomorrow, aerobics for me followed by Yoga. I have to find something healthy to substitute for alcohol, without the fallout. Yoga seems to fit the bill by stretching me physically and spiritually.

Kevin, I had a kind of strange epiphany I'd like to breeze by you...as I said, I am trying to discipline myself as well. The dentist is someone I avoid, if possible. But the 2nd molar was just too much and I had NO CHOICE but to attend to my teeth at this point.

Well, I was just thinking...in many ways, I applied the same procrastinating mind set to stopping drinking...I'll do it tomorrow...it's not THAT bad....and so on.

Finally, like my teeth, I realized that enough was enough and I had NO CHOICE BUT TO TAKE ACTION. Surrender, in other words, realizing I couldn't call the shots any longer.

I know this may sound like a bit of a stretch, but it was an AHA moment for me so thanks for this thread. You never know where the next insight will come from, hmmm?

I think I'm the kind of person that will look for wiggle room. I know this is how I have been with my teeth. I just had never made the connection to my inability to commit to stopping drinking and that, perhaps, this is an across the board personality characteristic! Best to know your adversaries, huh?
